Removing stock shift ****
I am trying to install a differnt Porsche 6spd shift **** in my '99C4. The new one has a hex set screw. I popped the leather boot off the console but can't figure out how to remove the existing shift know off the shift lever.
I have searched all the past posts on the B&M instal and haven't seen this addressed. I would appreciate any help from the group.
Thanks

If your original know doesn't have a set-screw like the new one, then all you have to do is pull it straight off (very hard). You can loosen it a bit by twisting it side to side first. Be careful not to hit yourself in the face when it releases (it comes off rather suddenly).
Good luck!

With a tite grip on the handle just pull up-it will come out but make sure elbows don't start flying up the roof when handle relases and all. I asked the same question on the board and it's easy. I have a '99 996 so we should have the same kinda shifter handle. Regards. Mike

Mike,
My MY99 has a screw holding the shift **** on. So... I think it varies from car to car and whether you have the stock **** or aluminum/leather or carbon fiber.

Yeah I was assuming he had the same one as mine as he said the new one had a screw on which must mean his stock one doesn't. But you know what ASSUME gets you into : ). Mike

The old shift **** does not have a set screw while the new one does. Okay I am heading down to give a good tug and see what happens. All that pretty white plastic inside is what scares me the most. I have a mental picture of most of the shift mechanism coming out and sailing out the sunroof.
Thanks for all the help.

I tried very veyr hard to remove the stock shift ****; pulled, yanked, twisted, tugged, cussed etc with no effect. My hands slipped once and alomst KOed me. I guess I am just not as strong as others who have managed to do this.
I had to take the car to the shop anyway for some warranty work and I asked them to do it. The next time should be easier since the knb I am putting on has a set screw.
Thanks for all the advice from forum members.

Prabha, I see you are from MN. If you were not already planning to do so you should consider bringing your 996 up to BIR next weekend. It's even more fun that changing your shift ***.

I too have a '99 (C2) and I'm trying to remove the shift ****.
Heh ... guys I'm seriously tuggin' in this thing and it isn't giving at all. I can't see a "set screw" anywhere but maybe I'm overlooking it? Is it pretty obvious to see? I'm not sure how forceful you guys are pulling but I'd guess I'm pulling hard enough to lift a 70-80lb dumbbell.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Some shift ***** have a set screw on them, but most OEM ***** do not. The set screw will be up high on the shaft after you have lifted the leather boot up. If you don't see a set screw, then the know just pulls off.
Be careful when you pull the shifter **** off of the shifter. It will take a lot of force, and it will come loose suddenly. You can smack yourself pretty well if this happens. I took two screwdrivers and placed on each side of the shifter shaft. The screwdrivers face in opposite directions so you can hold the handle of one screwdriver and the shaft of the other screwdriver in each hand. Sitting in the driver's seat, place your left forearm on your right knee. With your palm facing up, grab the left side of the two screwdrivers (already on each side of the shifter shaft) with your left hand and the right side of the screwdrivers with your right hand (also facing palm up). You can now use your left knee as a fulcrum and pry the **** off. It may go flying straight up, but you won't knock your teeth out.
