X51 vs. GT3 vs. GT3R
What are the differences (mechanically) between the 3 engines? I know they're all based on essentially the same shortblock but what are the major/minor differences. Go ahead, bore me with the details .

Three Wheelin'
WOW... alot of differences.
Just hitting the basics, the X51 is a M96 block where the GT3 and GT3 Cup are GT1 blocks. I'm not sure about the GT3R. The X51 uses a newer engnie management system than the GT3 did. They do share certain parts such as the intake manifold. The GT3 motors are true dry sump motors where the X51 is a hybrid and the older 3.4 are not at all. The X51 is a street motor as is the GT3, but the Cup and GT3R are pure race motors, with lightweight flywheels, larger cams and no emissions concerns.
There are hundreds of technical details, what in particular are you looking for?

I believe all of the M96 series engines share the same basic "integrated" dry sump oiling system. GT3 and GT3R use a "true"/ classic dry sump systems with an external oil tank. GT3 series and TT are based on the same GT1 block .

Well to start off what parts are interchangable with say a 996 C2? I wish I knew P-Cars like I know Hondas. Just doing a little research for somebody close to me. Any good resources on this kind of stuff? I don't even know the engine codes...

BTW Ed, your car is optioned exactly as I'd get mine. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

There are not really any useful parts that can be interchanged between the GT3 engine and the 996, they are totally different. Some people are selling headers/exhaust systems for the 996 and using the term "SuperCup" but these are not OEM GT3 parts.
Unfortunately, if you want GT3 performance in a 996, you'll either have to buy a real GT3 or have someone do an engine/transmission swap for you, which is probably a $60-75K job if you use new parts.
The best source for part info is to get a copy of the PET CD that is used by the dealers. The PET catalog includes ROW cars, so all the GT3 street car parts are in there. I don't know of any source for GT3 Cup or GT3RS parts, other than talking to Porsche Motorsports North America directly.
