Trying to figure out the logical upgrade from my 964 when its time to trade her in. I always thought i would get a 993 next but now i'm not so sure anymore. The way 996 prices fall these days, a well sorted out 993 will cost the same or even more... So why dont go for a newer/better car? I haven't driven the 996 yet. If i had i would probably know what car i wanted. But on paper the 996 seems like a good deal. How is it to live with the 996 (I know about RMS issues), and how is it to drive compared to the 993? Sorry if this have been up in an earlier post.

both are great cars.
each has its own prob. rms on 996, premature valve guide wear/CEL on 993 just to name what came to mind mind. some say one car will out last the other, but how long do you really plan to keep it?

go drive both, they feel very very different. one will speak to you.

 

Just as John says, go drive them both. You'll know after a few test drives.

 

After driven both the 996 was the choice.

 

The 993 will drive much more like your 964, while the 996 has a "softer" feel to it. They're very different cars!

 

Drive them both and see for your self they are both great cars, but very different. A 993 is well older technology with an int that has been the same since 1969 but some like that.Both cars have their own gremlins and far from perfect.I bought a 996 because it is a great daily driver and had warranty and it was easy to get one with the options and colours i wanted.I think every Porsche is better then the one before.

 

Hi - this is my favorite topic - I looked at 993s for 3 months and drove a ton of them - in Southern California, they are nearly as much as a 996 for one in good shape, so....I test drove a 996 and never looked back. The 993 is great, and I wish I had the room and money for both, but they're different driving experiences. The 993 is much more raw, a great drivers car. The 996 is still a great car, but much more refined, so it depends what you want. You can't go wrong either way, but if you drive both, I think you'll wind up in a 996....

 

Actually in my area late model 993s are priced much higher than early model 996s. I guess there's still a strong demand for the last of the air cooled engines.

 

Newer is not necessarily better. My car is consistently faster than 99 and 00 996's owned by a couple of guys I know.

 

First of all, I don't believe a '95 993, which has less power than the '96 through '98 models, is faster than the 996s - maybe you're a better driver than your friends. Also, unless you're at the track and know exactly what you're doing, few people are going to drive these cars at their limits, and pure speed is not the only factor under discussion. Foss, don't worry about RMS issues - the 993 is probably more costly to maintain. Drive both and go with what feels better to you. Just make sure to get a PPI. I personally think the 993 is better looking than the 996, and I love the way the 996 looks, so you can't go wrong. You have to drive both to make this decision. If you read through the 993 and 996 forums, you'll find that both sets of owners are very happy and passionate about their cars.

 

My friend just went thru the valve guide ordeal on his 993, 8k later. A RMS pails in comparison.

 

Beleive what you want....I am not the only "95" 993 that is faster than 3.4 996's.

 

Really, I've never had any problems passing 993s on the track, then I'll get passed by some old 964. It doesn't mean sh#t. It's all driver skill on a road course. In a pro drivers hands I'll take a 3.4 over any similarly equipped 993.

 

Luis - you're starting a new debate and even if you're right, you're not willing to admit that choosing a 993 or a 996 is about more than pure speed - why don't we answer Foss's questions, and if you want to debate speed alone, feel free to start a new thread. I've already admitted that 993s are awesome and I wish I had one in addition to a 996 - is that what you're looking for? Try to think bigger picture here...
