Newbie Question / Engine Smell
This is probably a ridiculous question, so my apologies in advance. However, after driving my 996, when I exit there is a distinct "hot-engine" smell, and quite a lot of heat at the back of the car. I assume that this is normal, and is something I notice because it's rear-engined and I have to walk past the hot engine. Now that I have a car with functioning gauges (last car 85.5 944 <img border="0" alt="[byebye]" title="" src="graemlins/wave.gif" /> ) I presume all is well. But....

Yes, it's normal. I love that smell. I don't no how to discribe it. You will even hear your engine pinging sometimes as the metal cools down.
I have that hot smell all the time, especially after a hard drive and I have had no problems with my car. (knock on wood)

I don't want to scare anyone - just passing along my (incomplete) experience. I am new to my car ('99 C2) and noticed the same smell in the garage after a good drive. A lot of people here describe the same thing, and it "seemed" normal. I took the car in for its 30k check-up (2 wks before warranty expired) and asked them to thoroughly check over the car. The shop came back and said my rear main seal was leaking (a problem noted by many on this board) and that they would replace it under warranty (2 days in labor, $1000+ job). Now, I don't have the car back yet, but I'll be curious to see if this repair fixes the smell. If my car no longer smells, I'd have to think the burning we all describe is more dangerous than we think. I'll let you know what I find...hopefully everything is fine, and our smell is "normal".

I have had 3 Porsches, a 993 C4, Boxster s and a 996 c4s, all of them have the smell, the warmth and the pinging as the oil drips when the engine shuts down. It is part of the beautiful mechanical symphony of Porsche ownership and is to be savored not feared.

Yep, my car is now 6 months old and the smell is as strong as ever after a run - glad to know it's not just mine - have looked/felt under the car for oil seal leaks but it's as dry as a bone at the moment.
