I am not a 996 owner as of yet. I have heard of this problem in the 1999 cars. My mechanic tells me if I buy a 99 to be sure that it has had the engine replaced. You will need to have all documented services on this. Does your coolent dissapear and not leak and you constantualy add more? I believe porsche will replace the engine. This is what I have heard, but don't quote me on this, since this doesn't apply to me. I am sure other owners will speak on this matter. I would love to hear more on this subject, since I will only be able to swing a 99 once I sell my 81.

Sounds like a head gasket or other problem- your modded ECU or headers could cause you warranty grief . PCNA could claim that thermal properties of engine were affected by either mod.

Didn't the recent Excellence have something on this re: the Boxsters? It was some sort of oil/water separator that was failing. You might check this out before assuming it's a blown head gasket.

I just had this problem and Porsche replaced the engine under my Porsche extended warranty. I was a little surprised. I had 33K miles on the car - and never had an RMS problem.
Oh well - Now I have a new engine.

I did not mean to imply that my problem was an RMS problem. I just mentioned that I have never had one.
My engine was replaced because of the oil/coolant mixing problem mentioned by the original poster.
