As the colder weather has recently kicked up in certain areas (such as here!), so has the number of posts pan-forum about the utility/necessity of winter tires.
So,...please respond to the following poll for 996 owners (past and present).
THANKS...just curious to see what you all do.

My 2002 C2 is awesome in the snow with the dunlops M2's. Use to have an 01 audi S4, and this car is almost as good with these tires. The audi had continental extreme contacts. The audi with stock pirelli's and then yoko AVS were probably about equal with this car on flat ground. I only noticed some extra slipping at the end of the winter when the real wet heavy snow was on the ground and needed to keep my momentum. I drive my porsche to vermont several times a year, with thule box mounted to porsche rack, and two kids in the back seat. The C4 is not neccessary for getting to where you need to go. It may be that much better with dedicated snows, but not neccessary.

Sorry, can't vote, no category.
2001 AWD 911/996... doesn't leave it's nice warm garage in the wintertime. 78 911 Targa used to go skiing with cable chains on rear.
2001 AWD RX300 instead, 1.5" spacers all around, summer tires (Bridgestone Turanzas) for quiet, ALWAYS, snow chains on rear when needed.
Anything but tire chains is simply a band aid.

17" Dunlop Winter M2 for the past 4 winters, 6mm spacers in the front, 25mm spacers in the rear.
Car handles better in the snow than my wife's Lexus RX-330.

Riad,
Your wife's RX330 is either FWD, extremely dangerous on adverse, slippery roadbeds, or is AWD that is 90/10 F/R torque biased and is extremely dangerous on adverse, slippery roadbeds.
I so dearly love my wife I would never let her go out in our 2001 AWD RX300 in adverse conditions absent rear snow chains already installed.

What do you mean by this,....Can you please explain. My wife and I drive a 2001 rx300, it's been great. What's wrong with it's AWD. You think the 90/10 torque bias, which only comes when needed can be treacherous, and some how lexus engineers did'nt know about this.

We had the 2001 AWD RX-300 and now have a 2004 AWD RX-330. We put Blizzak tires on it for the winter which is a significant improvement over the all season tires which don't do anything extremely well.
The AWD Lexus is fine in the snow, and if you hit the little snow button it kills the torque so you avoid tire spin.
However, my Porsche has a much better handling and feel. The Lexus is a sponge on wheels, it's terrible and it's engine lag is deplorable.
jmtc,
Rob

Hey, Riad I know my lexus is crappy when compared to a porsche, but wwest seem to imply that there may be something inherently dangerous with it's AWD system. I want to know what's so dangerous about it.

I've got a nice Audi S4 with Blizzaks that gets me through the winter quite nicely. The TT is hibernating until St. Patrick's day when it will emerge from its slumber. It's like having a new car every spring.
Cheers,
