Default Rear main seal

Is failure of the rear main seal something you still need to be worried about after 60thousand miles? Or is it something that would have happened by now if it was prone to do so? And what is the cost to fix if it did happen? Thanks for your help.

I think you can have RMS issues at any point in time. I had one at 32K miles, I am sure others will chime in with higher mile cases.

If you do the repair at the dealer they will quote $1000-1300. I had mine done at a independent Porsche shop for just under $600 I supplied the parts. I also had them put in a new clutch and flywheel at no additional cost other then the parts I supplied. The clutch was not necessary however while they were there It was an advantage to have the work performed.

Nope a horse is a large animal and takes much beating to die. You have never killed one obviously.

As others may have stated, the RMS leak can occur during any point of ownership...I myself have been fortunate to this point and I am not worried if it does occur.

THE way i understand it is if there is a misalignment issue in the internals of the engine(line bored out of spec) then the seal will leak. porsche tests this with a special tool and if out of spec they replace the engine.

SO THE QUESTION IS....if the seal has not leaked earlier it should not leak later in life...unless the seal ages and wears out and leaks then it is not an issue?

after having read ALL the posts about rms is my summary correct???

thanks

question:
if everyone just says "do a search" and everyone follows this advice, how is this board to reflect new information and experieces by owners unless those with the new info themselves start a thread?

I don't agree with Do a search as answer. I do searches myself often and some topics are discussed over and over again. However no matter how many threads there are I always find new information or an experience that had not been shared before.

Thank you Sandoval. I did do a search and no where did I see a cost estimate which I got from you on your first post.

I nice mod to this site would be to identify specific words that are frequently searched for and when someone posts a new thread with one of those words or phrases, in addition to starting the new thread, a window would open highlighting other threads with the same subject matter. Best of both worlds.
