Talking UPS man dropped off a new toy yesterday (hee, hee)

I got a professional camera mount for my MiniDV to attend DE's with. It's amazing! It is a suction based 6" cup with a pump that can hold up to 70lbs!!!

It's so cool, I went right out and played with a couple of various angles on my "test route" near my house. This thing is a riot!!

(Note on vid: you may need to update to QuickTime 7.0 to view. You can do this at Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/ )

Can't WAIT to hit the track now...

Great video!! Did you stick that thing to the rear window?

It must hold pretty strong. Have you seen the Carrera GT video where the camera is mounted by the front tire as one of the angles. Do you think you will try to stick it to the front corner panel and get some down low video?

Where did you order the mount from?

Great vid. Can't wait to see the track vids.

Boy, I would love to have a mount like that--although I would be scared to mount my Canon 20D/16-35L lens out in the breeze.

Thanks! To make the vid, I mounted the camera to three spots:

1. Back window (interior shot)
2. Side Rear Window (exterior shot)
3. Roof (exterior shot)

Like I mentioned it has a hold strength of 70 lbs!! My MiniDV only weighs 2. For info, I bought the mount here: http://www.filmtools.com

Here is the specific product I bought: http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/gripexsucvac.html

They had great service and I received the mount in about 3 days. (UPS ground).

BRING ON THE TRACK DAYS!!

Wow thats a really cool video Chad, well done. I was looking at those for the harness bar but that looks more versitile and it costs about the same. What kind of Mini DV do you have?

OK, now I have to buy one of those, damn. I'm assuming it doesn't damage the car, and even at high speeds, it wont fall off?

If it aint bolted down I would not want it flying at me when it loses suction and goes for its own ride. I will stick with the bar mounted variety.

Brian, excellent positive feedback. And, I agree...for a person with a roll bar! With this particular mount, the trick is to saftey tie the camera mount AND the camera to a hard mounted item close to it. Sooo...it the event of an accident you will be okay. ...these type of mounts are used in professional filming. They have put these on aircraft...the EXTERIORS of aircraft. I researched the hell out of this after I saw one at the track mounted to a Vette. I was very impressed.

riad: if you mount it to the exterior, you should also have saftey line attached to it to prevent damage to camera / car if a problem occurs. However, also note...there are very small remote cameras that can be connected with DV equipment. Much safer. Furthermore, most event committees do not allow equipment to be placed on the exterior. Too much risk.

Believe me. I would NOT have this in my car if, I did not think it would be safe. I am going out tomorrow to purchase to safety lines for it. I will post the final setup when I am completed.

Hope this helps...

cheers,
Chad

bow: I have a Sony Mini DV DCR-HC40. Great clarity, stability control and comes with Zeiss Lens. I really like it.

Side note - Kirb, have you been trying to call me? My mobile has been ringing off the hook. Every time I finally get to it, the caller hangs up.

A buddy of mine used that at the track for videos, it seemed to do very well, but a couple of instructors gave it a double take. Check with your PCA region, it may not be allowed on the track.
Chad I thought you sold your car?

Hey DJ,

Yeah...I did. But...I still have Porsche in my veins. Still a member (PCA & Rennlist). And...I will have another Porsche. Maybe a GT3.

As far as the mount goes, the safety ties are the way to go. By itself, I don't advise that route. Securing properly will prevent issues.

Default Looks cool -- what car is that?

Doesn't look like your 996? Or am I just not looking close enough?
