Default Fabspeed exhaust muffler installation

I am in the process of buying a 100% stock 996 Carrera over this weekend, I have also heard 996 models fitted with fabspeed mufflers and have ordered a pair of them for my 996.

My questions are...

How difficult is it to install these mufflers?

Is it something I could do myself? (I have maintained and repaired all my own Porsche models including clutch jobs on my 944, 911SC and others.

Do I have to remove the back bumper to install them? and if so, how do I do that? is it hard?

Is there an online proceedure or tutorial for installing these mufflers?

Thanks in advance

Its easy do a search for install under all of my post, I did write a procedure down some where. It takes a few wrenches, WD40, and removal of the rear tire. You can also check Renntech.org they have lots of DIY write ups. It take about 1 hour for both mufflers, unless you got some rusted together bolts under there.

Took me about 2 hours to do it (but I'm not terribly mechanically inclined). I didn't need to remove a tire, I just put the car up on jackstands (be sure to search for the thread about properly putting your car on jackstands before trying that...).

It's easy. Good luck.

Here is a paste of the instuctions.
Oil its easy takes about 1 hour if your not installing the electronics.
1. Take off 3 13mm nuts on the side of the mufflers. Don't take out the long nuts that goes through the bracket and muffler. That bracket is bolted to a bracket that is bolted to the engine. The nuts I'm talking about connect the muffler bracket to the engine bracket.
2. Remove/ loosen the clamps that connect the muffler to the cats. Its 16mm and slide out the pipe.
3. Remove rear tire and remove the muffler from the wheel well.
4. Remove the long bolts and bracket then bolt them to new muffler 13mm
5.Take out clamps for tips 16mm and put tips on new muffler. then install in reverse.

no need to remove the tire. The stock muffler is a little tight to get out but it will come out w/o removing the tire..Hint..WEAR GOGGLES while under the car looking up at the mufflers!!!!! The simple instructions that come with the Fabspeed are great. Have fun!!!!

Yup very easy install. Nothing you can't figure out just by looking at it. I will second the eye protection whenever working on exhausts. It took a metal sliver in my eye which caused great agony, 3 hours in the ER waiting room, and 10 minutes with the doc to get it drilled out, to the tune of 1800 bucks. Now those 10 dollar safety glasses get a lot more use.

Took mine to a local exhaust shop and they charged me $120.00 for the install. About 2 hours worth of work. Was worth it for me.

Cool, it all sounds simple, but I have decided to book my car in with the local independent Porsche workshop in Bournemouth (John Mitchell's) to get it installed.

He said it could take anything from 45 mins, to a couple of hours, depending on how everything comes apart, so should be about £35 to £80 (about $70 to $150 in dollars), the local main dealer quoted about 4 times as much!!! I would rather pay him to do it so I dont mess anything up until it get used to working on this new beast!

I recently had my Maxflo Fabspeed Muffler Install by Joe (Owner of Fabspeed) let me tell you, it is truly awesome, sound throttle response, on the money. Best mod thus far, oh yea the headers also helped :-)

how much extra work is involved in a header install and how much do they cost?

Also, what difference do they make rather than just the mufflers?

I Don't know. I did not do headers but I have heard of broken bolts when removing them.

Funny you mentioned broken bolts, I had two that broke during the install of the headers, a quick run to Home Depot and we were back in business. - The sound and throttle response is truly awesome, even my wife loves it.

i dunno about you guys, but i really...REALLY struggled trying to remove my mufflers ('99 996 C2). the slip that connects them to the cats was rusted real bad and took some real wrenching to get it loose. once that happened it seemed like the muffler was just stuck there in that cavity inside the bumper, and i had to yank in all kinds of directions to get it to come out. BTW removing the rear tire was very neccessary to get the muffler out. even with all the struggling though, ended up being about 30 min per side
