Newbie q: interior sqeaks
Hello, I'm a Porche newbie who's considering the purchase of a used 996. A test drive of a 2000 C2 from the local dealer revealed two or three interior squeaks while driving over rough roads, and in Delaware the roads are usually rough. My search for posts related to squeaks on the 996 found mixed experiences: some cars are quiet and some have squeaks. Is this the general rule? If some cars have them and some don't then I'll keep looking.

Squeaking/rattling sound is most likely coming from the front/rear window seals. Bruce Anderson of Excellence Magazine recommends simply spraying some Pedro's Ice Wax between the glass and outside seal which solves it. Also a Technical Bulletin regarding insertion of a foam cord in same spot does the trick as well; but either takes much longer than the spray fix, or requires a trip to the dealer and $200 per window.

Dan,
IMHO by their nature most due squeak. But as Djant stated owning a Porsche is all about its driving experience if ever you get to track the car then you'll become a believer. My 2001 c2 carrera squeaks, but I do have one that is very nagging that seens to be commimg from the passenger side air bad, my wife can never really put her finger on it, so I guess that I'll bring it into the dealer to see if they can find the culprit.
In terms of tracking the car Dan I should just mention that in my early 20's I raced everytnig from GT3,SS Honda civics,SS Players Chanlenge (Camaro/Firebirds)and finally F2000 at Spenard David in Shannonville,Ontario raceway in 1987 - that year Emprinham was there, Carpentier (with long Hair) and Litle Jacques Villeneuve, by the way Richard Spenard the KIng as he is called in Eastern Canada is an increadible driver. But I digress...I got a chance to track this car for the first time last year at Tremblant and Mosport raceway in Ontario..I was not only impressed with the quality of the drivers but their speed and theirmaturity on track and the PCA regions empasis on safety and level headness while on track. In all of my 10 years in real race conditions I had never received such feedback while driving as I did during these two events (An instructor is present in the car w/you w/ a communication device to walk you threw the pace.)
All in all the car was F...g amazing - I could not beleive it - and I still had a lot more to learn in terms of its specific caracteristics in order to go fast while still maintaning complete contol. I still talk about it to all my old racing friend as to how amazing these cars are stock out of the box to the track..
Enjoy it once you get it.
My 2 cents

Ask your service center if they'll provide you with TSB 1/00 7018, 4/99 6420, 2/00 7.. and 2a/00 7057. These are all the noise correction TSBs.

4/99 6420, Noises At The Windshield and Rear Window
2/00 7.. Noise in the trim Panel
2a/00 7057 Noise in the Door/Trim Panel Area, A-Pillar
3/00 7059 Noise in the Door/Trim Panel Area
Fixes are mostly double sided tape for the panels and rubber seal for the windshield. If you're a member of renntech.org you can view them all there.

My '99 had lots of squeaks. Lubricating the window seals helped some. The dashboard always made noise too, until the car warmed up and then it would go away (very odd, but they all seem to do it). When they did the facelift in '02 they also stiffened the chassis and took car of the squeaks. Dan, if you can afford it, I'd highly recommend a newer car ('02 on) since they're much improved over the earlier ones...and no squeaks.

The older 996's all had the same squeaks, which I haven't heard in any of the newer cars that I've been in. Not to imply that they're perfect, just better.
Don't get me started on the clutch spring though...
