Default DME Vehicle Data

I had my 2001 996 in at the dealership for a warrenty issue and they checked the computer for a engine abuse. No problem, looks good. The question I have relates to the findings, see below:

911 (996) DMI Vehicle Data
Number of ignitions, range 1
6254 - - - 1250.8 hours
Number of ignitions, range 2
101 - - - 41.2 hours
Operating hours counter
1255.7

1) The operating hours counter is less than the ignition hours by 36.3 hours. Is this time period reflective of factory run in? If so, then I would presume the run in lasted 36 hours. The range two hours then reflects 5.2 hours of engine life in Zone 2, right?
2) The ranges are RPM values. Does anyone know the specific RPM transition between Zone 1 and Zone 2?
3) Finally, does anyone know the spedific values or ratios that Porsche does not want to see for warranty purposes? I want to keep both Porsche and myself happy.

The only one you need to worry about is stage 2 (over-revs). Stage 1 over-revs are fine since the rev limiter protects the engine - these are acceleration over-revs. The range 2 over-revs are potentially engine damaging since these can not stopped by the DME or other means. Range two over-revs are usually caused by a bad downshift forcing the engine to over-rev (without any control) or by spinning the car and running the engine backwards (because the clutch was not depressed in time).
A normal number for range 2 is 0.

I dont follow your numbers. The total amount of hours on the engine is 1255.7. The last occurance of a range 1 ignition was at 1250.8, or roughly 5 hours before the data was read from your DME. I dont know what you mean by your number two statement either. 6254 and 101 are exactly what it says, number of ignitions which occured past the rev limiter (range 1) and the number of ignitions above whatever number of rpms it is they decided was past the mechanical limits of the engine.

The range twos are bad news. If you came in with a catastrophic engine failure and showed up with those range two numbers, its ammo for them to deny a warranty claim.

I purchased the car second hand, so the range 2 figures I didn't know about.

Since I only today learned how to read the data I didn't know what I was seeing.

However, the "rev limiter" did not engage in the last 5 or even 20 hours of seat time. I did have the car close to red line in 2nd gear (about 80 mph) within the 5 engine hour period. Specifically, if anyone knows it, what is the exact RPM figure when Zone 1 engages?

Additionally, is the DME simply tracking last incident. For example, the recent Zone 1 incident... 6254 ignitions
6 cyl engine: call it 1000 revolutions of the engine or about 6-8 seconds

Will a "chip dump" provide a complete list of all Zone 1 and Zone 2 incidents?

Nice picture Tool Pants, but it doesn't address "the story". 14 ignitions in range 2 isn't so bad and 34300 ignitions in Zone 1 simply means that you beat the rev limiter up on 5-6? occaisions for 8-10 seconds. (granted that no one has yet offered up the magical RPM start for Zone one other than "red line" and perhaps that's the answer and different from RPM limiter.)

I'm curious to understand the cutoff limit in Porsche's happy-feel good Pre-Owned program. In fact, it's probably worth asking Porsche about.

Over the years I have asked mechanics the parameters for range 1 and 2, and they did not know. Must be a German secret.

If you find out then let us know. Then find out how you can get a minus number.

Is ther any way to legally obtain a Porsche system tester 2. If not can other pc applications read the data from the dme? Well, either way I guess. Can the pc applications do any good with a Porsche
