Default air filter interval?

The air filter interval is 30K miles. Is there any point to changing it more frequently? It looks like a straightforward 15 min DIY job (based on Loren's excellent DIY page), but I'm feeling kind of lazy about taking things apart unless there is a good likelihood that I'll find it dirty.

How often do you guys change yours?

What does an air filter for a 996 cost anyway?

I just changed mine and it was pretty dirty. There were also some leaves, etc that had been sucked into the air box. I can't remember what the filter cost but it was probably around $50. One caution, there are two plastic spikes on the bottom of the airbox that fit into some holes to secure it. You can break these off pretty easily trying to get the box in or out.

Inexpensive item, I changed mine at 15k. The pollen air filter should be checked, mine needed to be changed at 8k.

I was avoiding the pollen filter because 90% of my driving is with either the top or windows down. Am I missing something?

If the A/C blower is running, the incoming air via that path is being "filtered".

I change the pollen and air filters on all my cars at two year intervals. They usually still look OK; but, hey, filters are cheap and piece of mind is a good thing.

Changed my air filter after 17k miles and it really wasn't that dirty, but at $22. a pop, it's cheap enough to do.

Or you could remove the filter and blow off the dirt in between the "filter-fins". I do that with my oil changes.

Pop hood
Unfasten battery cover and raise a few inches
Unfasten passenger side plastic below windshield and pull cover out and off
Look in towards firewall where the filter is fastened and do your thing
It's a tight fit so do some wiggling to get it into sliding in there with out crumpling the filter
