new 996 owner looking for advice
Just purchased a 99 carrera 2 cab with 53k miles. This is my first Porsche. Any advice on routine maintenance and/or winter storage for a newbie?

CC,
Assuming that you have made the decision to park the car for the winter, I would do a search. The topic has been discussed at length. In short, if you are just storing it for a few months, change the oil, fill the tank, pump up your tires to 50 lbs, plug in a trickle charger and you're fine. Park the car and don't start it until you are ready to use it regularly again. If there are rodents where you park, you should take other percautions like mothballs and plugging the exhaust pipes and such. If you have the time you can also wax the car, treat the leather, etc, etc.
As for maintenance, I would find a good independent Porsche specific mechanic and seek their advice. That along with the advice in the manual should get you started in the right direction. The one exception is the 15k oil change interval. I would cut that down to 5k-7.5k.
Finally, become a Rennlist member. It's a very cheap source of information and entertainment.

Kilrgt, Do you have a LSD or the traction control option on your car? I don't but found my 04 C2 with Snowsport snow tires to do well so far here in NJ. Have not had any real snow yet but have experienced sleet and freezing rain with out a problem...using my head of course while driving....
Thanks...Dave

I just can't see the logic in driving your porsche in the snow. Especially when you have other vehicles that were designed for that. I'm sure with proper snow tires our cars go very well in bad weather. It's the other a__ holes out there that don't know how to drive that would scare the crap out of me. They put salt on the roads here in PA every time they think it's gonna snow. I would have to wash the undercarriage every time I took it out. So I bite the bullet and put them away until the spring. Full tank, battery tender, inflate tires.

I've heard that trickle charger would eventually overcharge the battery, a battery maintainer will only charge the battery when it's discharging below the critical level.
i got this info from autoweek on dishnetwork last week.:-)
