I was just informed that there has been a recall for my 2000 996.The recall is for an update of the DME fault software(recall #W201000) There is also a recall on the gas-cap.Has anyone had this done and do you know what the problem was? The local Porsche dealer seemed clueless about it.Thanks in advance
You should have received this info in the mail long ago. I can't recall what the problems were, but I don't think they affected driveability or safety. I had it taken care of at least two years ago.
Thanks Paul.I believe Ohio is about 2 years behind CA.in just about everything! Seriously, I just heard about the recall. The car drives fine and it will be snowing here soon anyway
Who told you there was a recall. Oops, I mean a service action.
Any dealer can punch in your VIN on a phone line and it will tell you of any recalls. Any service guy at a dealer can put your VIN in the computer and it will say it there is an open recall.
The gas cap replacement deal was years ago so it may have already been done. There should be a sticker on the engine lid if it was already done.
Prior to that the original orange gas cap seal was replace with the black version. Guess it did not solve the emisssion issue as then the recall happened.
I'll check for the sticker.I signed up w/car-fax a few days ago to check out another car and thought I'd run the 996 as well as my other cars, even though I've been told that their records are often inaccurate. It showed up as having 1 outstanding recall.I bought the car in 2002 but didn't find any service records related to a recall. Thanks everybody!
Did not know Carfax had that info. It would be strange if your dealer did not want to run your VIN for any open recalls since they get paid by Porsche for taking care of it. You can always call Atlanta and ask them to do it for you. 1-800-PORSCHE
On a Boxster the gas cap recall sticker is not on the gas flap. It is above the emission sticker on the rear trunk lid. I assume the emission sticker on a 996 is on the rear engine lid. Look there.
Called Porsche and the gas cap and updated software were not handled by the previous owner for some reason, although the car is in exceptional shape.Hope it didn't hurt anything
I bought a 1997 Boxster in 1999 from a local owner. A few months later a recall notice for the ignition switch was sent to him and he gave it to me, as I guess the DMV records used for the recall are not up to date. I ignored it as I had no problem with the switch, and it had been replaced the year before.
Then more months or a year went by and Porsche sent me the same recall notice.
After about 3 years of ownership I finally went in, but because it was the air bag warning light staring me in the face. They punched in my VIN and I saw on the screen all the prior work that had been done on my car by the prior owner and that there was an open recall. So the switch was replaced again.
You did not hurt anything. But you have a funny dealer if they do not want to do recall work.
I have a feeling that this particular dealer sells and services far more Audis than Porsches. They just happen to be the dealer nearest me.My service work on my older P-cars is handled by a Porsche-only facility.Thank-you for your help.I'm sure everything is fine and the car only has 5,000 mi.so far.I just pray that there are no RMS problems down the line.Thank-you very much-----John
