Does anyone have any experience with these tires on a 996 for open track driving? There's a good discussion on the autocross board regarding this tire, but I want to hear from 996 drivers who use this tire for track days.

Because of a shortage of of R3S04s in 245/35/18, I used A3S04s on front and 305/30/18 R3S04s on back at a club race at Brainerd a couple of weeks ago. Brainerd is a very high speed track. Some claim that it's the fastest track in North America. I thought the A's worked great. They did not wear as well as R's but they stayed pretty sticky through a 60 minute enduro. I was very happy with them. Having said that, I will go back to R's when they are available.

Thanks, Jim. I'm going to run PSC's this year. I may look to the Hoosiers as replacements at the end of the year if the wear issues can be answered. Otherwise, Toyo RA-1's look attractive.

I haven't met anyone that is using them. Are they new to the market?

I haven't heard of anyone using them either. Hoosier has had it's troubles with the 04s but they are still the choice of 95% of club racers. Most racers end up buying a set every race weekend though.
If you are more into DE and want a long lasting tire and maybe one you can drive to the track I've yet to hear of a better tire than the PSCs. They are expensive but stick pretty well and last a long time.
Eric, what have you heard about the Toyos? A good alternative to the PSCs?

The Toyo RA-1's are pretty popular in my neck of the woods (DE's and open track). They seem to get up to temp wore quickly and last as long as the PSC's. They don't come in 285's so folks are using 275's, which look like they fill out the wheel. I suspect that the true tread width is very close between the two tires. I met a group of BMW club racers who highly recommend them for their relative cost vs performance value. I'll run through my PSC's by the end of the year. I may get a roof rack to truck my track tires around. I don't think that you should drive to the track with the Hoosiers. The Toyos can be driven to and from the track.

I've used the Dunlop SS and I've found them to be cheaper by about $150/set and last a little longer( as far as I can tell). I've only had them at the same track once (at WGI) and my spot speed checks were basically the same for both sets.
You can flip them like MPSCs. I've bought two new fronts since I have a stock suspension and can't get enough camber for either the DSSs or the MPSCs. I've yet to mount the replacements.
I only do DEs, so if you are racing I don't know if the results would be the same. I'll lean toward the DSS, but I was satisfied with the MPSCs. The cost difference was enough of a difference for me!
I have 18" wheels.

i don't race, just DE's. i run RA1 exclusively on a 2004 996C2 with moton club sport. cambers are -2 front and -2.5 rear. i use the RA1 on track and on street. with this much camber, i get 1200 track miles and 4000 street miles for a set before the rear cord. if i only drove on track, i am sure i can get 2500 to 3000 miles on track. as such, i think they outlast MPSC. i have never hydroplaned on street with RA1 even in pouring rain. however, RA1 doesn't have the ultimate grip of MPSC.
