Default a few days of ownership and engine problems already

I have owned my 996 for a few days and it is in the shop for a bad lifter or valve. The dealer Len Stoler Porsche is taking it apart today or tomorrow. It was running on 5 cylinders. I bought it from a small dealer in Va. and am not sure of the warranty issue. I am faxing my paperwork to my attorney today. It sucks because I have not driven the car hard at all. I have owned 7 different Porsches and have never 1 time had an engine problem. Just venting a little.

The car was not purchased at Len Stoler, It was purchased from a small dealer in Virginia. I am not sure of Virginia law as far as warranty. In Maryland, by law a licensed car dealership can not sell a car without a 30day or 1000 mile warranty even if the paperwork says no warranty. That is an advantage of buying from a dealer. I have talked to an attorney in Virginia and he said to hold off until 1 they find out exactly what is wrong with the car and 2 what the dealer is going to do about paying for it.

Did you have a pre-purchase inspection before you bought it? If not, maybe it would have caught the problem.

Out of curiosity, how did you figure out that you were only running on 5 cylinders?

I took it to the Porsche dealer because it was making loud clunking noises from the engine bay and didn't have any power. The idle was also rough. The dealer said it was running in 5 cylinders.

Gawd, that sucks! I'm sure you have a valid argument to get the selling dealer to pay for it. Good luck.

Sorry about your car. To my knowledge, I don't think VA has a law concerning waranties on purchasing vechicles. I could be wrong, and if so...let me know. As far as running on 5 cylinders, did they check to see if one of the spark plugs or spark plug wires were damaged. A few years back I took a trip from Greensboro NC to Wilmington NC, about 20 miles outside from Wilmington my car did the exact same thing. The clicking sounds, the loss of power. I think I recall even a slight bit of smoke. The problem was that cylinder 4's spark plug toasted, and the spark plug wire snapped in half. I just hope that shop isn't trying to pull a fast one on you, because a lot of them would do so. Good luck.

if its only been a few days you should be able to void the sale and return the car to the va dealer. beware of len stoller--they are not very well regarded--valley is much more experienced.

you should consider getting a porsche certified used car next time...

How long do you have to void a sale? I bought the car Thursday and it broke down Monday.

PPI saved me a big headache.

I was about to pull the trigger on a 2000 996, when the PPI caught the early stages of an RMS leak and other issues.

Best 150 I ever spend.

As far as warranty, I looked into a third party warranty service that covers bumper to bumper. warrantydirect.com

After speaking with the sales rep at warrantydirect, I called my local Porsche dealer, they informed me that claims with this company have been processed.

But I didnt buy the car and instead found a 2001 w/ all service history and remaining factory warranty.

Best of luck
