A bit OT - what was your first new 911 like?
Let me start this by saying I'm only 20, and broke as 20 years old guys usually are So no 911 for me, yet.
However, I got some good plans for the future, and whenever I think about becoming rich and how it would affect my life, I can only see cars.. Not a large house, not a yacht, nothing like that. Only cars. 911GT3 and Alpina B3, side by side, for example I mostly think about the 911 though. I've been admiring it since I knew what a car is.
I can say my will to succeed financially is greatly boosted whenever I visit Rennlist and read about those wonderful cars. It really drives me forward - Heck, it's almost educational
I wonder, has any of you been dreaming about a 911 since he was a kid, but never could afford it, and then one day everything changed for the better, and suddenly owning the car of his dreams became a reality?
For those, what it was like to step into the dealership and order it?
And what was the delivery like?
I'd really appreciate some stories I'm always drawn to delivery posts from excited owners...
Thanks

Roee, a poster of 964 turbo basically motivated me through high school and 8+ years of college. I never wanted a huge house or yaght's either, all i wanted were cars, especially a porsche.
Finally got mine a year ago, an 03 C4S, and i absolutely love it. My wife knew even before we got married that i will get a porsche, but she convinced me to buy a family car, an SUV and a decent house to park the porsche first, and I am glad she did. But, still my 3 cars add upto almost the same $ as my home.
So, have a plan and stick with it (for me it's staying at school) , 3 new cars and a home in 4 years since graduation ain't bad, and it's just the beginning. It has all been more wonderful than I ever had dreamed. So, there is definitely a bright light at the end of the tunnel if you have a plan and stick to it.

Ever since I was a kid, I'd always dreamed about having 'special' cars. I grew up with my parents having a 1960 Rambler Classic, and a 1963 Ford Fairlane wagon. (They'd be kind of cool now, huh? Back then, they were boring!)
My first dream of owning a specific car was a 1990 BMW 325is in white. Too expensive. I did gravitate to BMW's though - first owning a 1994 325i.
A good friend is a Porsche guy, and got me started when he pointed out that a Porsche is a much better track car than a BMW - and I was starting to do club driving events. We each bought 944's for the track (I still have mine and love it), but he kept going on about the virtues of the 911, and how I could track one also from time to time.
Well, he finally wore me down, and last year we both bought new Porsches on the same day - me the 996, while he picked up an '03 Boxster S. Great fun, and a bonding experience to boot. I've got lots of pictures from the delivery!
Good luck - I'm sure you'll get what you want.

I don’t know when I first started lusting a 911 but I know I was young, probably around 8 or 9 years old. At that time I was growing up in London, England, with my family living on Social Security (Welfare) and happy in the knowledge that I would never earn the kind of money necessary to own such a beast.
I also don’t know why it appealed to me back then when there were so many other ‘sexier’ vehicles such as Ferraris etc. but that it was for me. I do remember thinking that the 959 was the coolest thing around and being very upset that people were buying them and then not using them – what a waste!
I lusted after cars until I was around 23 and then I started getting into motorcycles. That pretty much took care of my lusting as to get motorcycle performance you had to spend a lot more money. There is also something about a bike that even the Porsche can't match - something about actually being part of the machine. If you don't ride then you probably won't get it.
My wife always knew that I wanted a Porsche but I had been putting it off – even though I could now afford to get one it didn’t seem particularly sensible with 3 young kids so I never brought the subject up. Instead I had an MR2 Spyder which was a lot of fun and a lot cheaper too (and the bikes of course).
This year on our anniversary my wife gave me a card over dinner. Along with the usual ‘what a fabulous husband you are’ stuff she had written “Let’s go buy that Porsche you always wanted”! I started looking that weekend.
For me it had to be a 911 – that was the only Porsche that I was interested in.
My first test drive almost put an end to the dream. I was trying to keep costs reasonable and so I looked at a used 2001 Cab. I took it for a drive and…it was HORRIBLE! I almost walked away at that point and never looked back but something in my mind said “hold on, how can it be that so many people lust after these as real drivers cars.” Instead I asked to take out an ’03 C4S that was parked next to it and, wow! What a difference. The first one must have been very tired and not well looked after but this thing was awesome.
As I had a 2WD cab already I thought that was what I wanted in the 911 too – but my heart really skipped a beat every time I saw the coupe, particularly the C4S with that wide rear, so that was finally the direction that I went in. I also loved the feel of the 4WD drive – it just felt like you could not make it go off the road if you tried.
I picked up my ’03 C4S about two months ago. As I was leaving the dealers I wondered “Was this a smart thing to do?” About 200 yards later I had no doubt that I had done the right thing.
Keep your spirits up, don’t be afraid to take chances and remember that inconvenience is a misperceived adventure and you will do fine.

I actually started lusting pre-911's though got to drive a friend's 911 when they first came out (when I was about 16). I waited a long time, raising kids, buying homes, etc., and though I looked at them on and off, it was never quite practical or affordable. I finally got a new 1993 RS America. This was after my 1992 divorce, which opened the door to take care of myself for a change. I wish my girlfriend (now my wife) had a camera when I pulled up in the new 911 that evening - I am sure I had a mile wide grin. The grins have never stopped!

Ok has everyone seen the the new Porsche 997 T.V spots. If not , it goes like... this a boy is in school and when he looks out of the window he see's the new Porsche driving thru.So after school he goes to the Local Porsche Dealership, he parks his Bicycle walks in and asks a salesman(whom is walking by) where the new 911 is. The salesman points to it, the boy sits in the car looks around a bit, gets out and walks over to the salesman. He then asks the salesman if he could have a card, the salesman smiles and gives him one. The Boy in turn smiles back and says " I'll see you in about 20 years"...............................Well That boy was me 22 years and i was in Germany when i first saw this Machine..........................I'll never go any where else!

I test drove one with a buddy of mine and we were open to the sales rep that we couldn't afford one, but hoped to in the future. He was super cool and let us drive the '99 996 in 1998. We both left in lust. OMG
We thanked him, and I said I'd hope to see him again with a check and an order.
1 year later, my startup that I joined had IPO'd and I was back with a check and an order. That was my first of 3 996's. The blue 2000 was it.
Ordering it sucked actually. Waiting on it sucked. Taking Delivery.... FREAKIN' HEAVEN!!! The next two were much more fun to order because I had a 996 to drive while waiting for their arrival.
Here are the pics of all 3:
2000 C2 Ocean/Savanna
2002 C2 Seal/Met Blue
2002 Twin Turbo Seal/GG
(don't have a good pic that's not huge)

I fell in love with Porsche's and the 911 since before I can remember. It really motivated me to do well. When I started programming I had a small model 911 and the screen saver up... when it was 2am and everyone went home and I was still writing code I would just look at that car and ask myself 'so you really want that, huh? What are you going to do for it?' and it would get me by.
Now I'm on my second 911, the first was a 2001 C4 and I actually got teary eyed when I sold it... wow that's some emotion for a car.

Wow, this is a great thread! I was going to make one kind of like this. Asking what kind of motivations made all of you guys so sucessful. Not necessarily jobs, but what kind of attitudes/ etc. got you to where you are today. Great Post Roee; I feel just like you.
Everytime I see a Porsche on the street, I get the chills (corny, I know). I feel like flickering the lights or honking the horn at them, but I don't want them to think I'm crazy.

Probably showing my age here but ......
I've always loved fast cars. Had several including AM DB6, Triumph Stag and an Etype V12. My 996 is my 3rd 911. My first was bought in the late 70s. Once you drive these cars it's hard to look at anything else. But I have had other cars between my 911s. While they have moved with the times and they got faster and more up to date, IMHO they aren't as reliable. But my 996 still puts the hairs up on my back when I open my garage doors
Here's me and my left hooker in Paris 1979.

My first was my 1996 993C4S I bought for my 40th birthday. My next will be a 997 (athough I am seriously considering a used 996 until the 997 has been out a year or so). My only regret is not buying one sooner!
Take my advice, though. Try to wait until you can pay cash. Debt debt can kill your greatest wealth building tool...your income!
