Default CTA transmission tool

Gearing up to do my trans mount, anyone have any experience with the CTA tool? Can I do this with the trans in the car? (would also buy a used tool if someone is done with theirs )

Plenty of info on here for many of these, they all seem similar.
Just make sure when using it that you push in from the chamfered side of the trans, so it doesn't try to install crooked which damages the aluminum.
Easy enough, I did mine with the car on axle stands.

Did you pop yours in the freezer at all? Amazon carries tool as well and has a favorable return policy so maybe I can do this on the cheap.

No, you dont have to freeze it. Not really enough mass in the mount to have a lot of shrinkage. They are designed to be pushed in a lot easier than a bearing.
A little bit of lube helped initially and make sure you grease the threads on the mount.

I used the CTA tool to change the mount on my manual C2. Transmission stayed in the car. No freezer was necessary.

The washers can take quite a beating... when I rented the tool to other members, I'd always replace them. After 5-6 uses, though, the threaded rods were bent and cross-threaded.

You can probably find another member on here who would be willing to rent their tool to you.

About to do the transmission mount on my 2003 C4S using the AGA tool. Would be happy to rent or sell it when I complete the job (which expect to be the next week or two). Plan to use the tool with car lifted on jack stands.

In meantime welcome any tips from others who’ve done this already.

This looks similar to any wheel bearing press kit, any reason I can’t use one of those? It’s about the size of a wheel bearing and doesn’t look as tight.

Most recent VWs/Audis have a similar size press in bushing called a “dogbone” that is a pendulum mount for the engine - the big caveat is you bolt through it vertically, so there is access from only one side. The 996 trans mount seems very reasonable by comparison!

I think I have the tool situation sorted out. My car is also missing I believe the 2 transmission stops (the thin urethane pieces on the side of the mount), anyone able to confirm if this is this the right part number? 996-375-255-05 for a 2004 manual C2.

The reason will be the size! It needs to be the correct diameter as the outside of the mount is quite skinny. Too big and wont fit through the trans, too small and it will wreck the new mount.
People have made there own from pipe, its just finding the correct size and having it on hand when you do it.
Borrow or rent the tool and its easy.

I just changed one out with the CTA tool, was easy once I figured out how to use it. There is basically no way you are going to be "make something work". The tool is $190, totally worth it. I'm keeping mine as I work on 996's.

Any tips for someone about to do it?

It's basically the same as the AGA tool and the video on that one makes it seem super straightforward. I'm just waiting on my mount to show up and I'll let er rip

It's been awhile since I did mine with the AGA tool but I remember it being pretty straightforward. I used some el-cheapo ratcheting box wrenches and I think put a little grease on the Acme threads on the tool. I don't remember if it seemed like the grease helped or not.
