Unfortuantely that's not the wiring diagram for the entire series of 996.
That is only the 1999 996 Carrera and the 2000 996 GT3.
For all of the year models of 996 Carrera, you'll have to get the Bentley manual.
If anyone has the other wiring diagrams in digital format, let me know.
I'd like to compare them to the Bentley wiring diagrams.
Yeah unfortunately the "Interactive Wiring Diagrams" in PIWIS doesn't start until 997 models, The 996 and Carrera GT are not included, you have to use "old school" diagrams.
I have the 1999 2000 one I keep handy and I have the 996.2 diagrams somewhere on an old thumb drive but I dont know where they are at the moment, if I run across them I will post them here..
Success! Just finished first session with my Cayenne. Was able to clear codes related to the headlight failure. I thought I would be able to diagnose the 'dipped beam' error, but it started working yesterday: go figure. So, I looked at operating values instead, comparing them to the other headlight. A lot of poking around in the different modules. I'll get on the 996 later today, although there is nothing I need to look at, we'll look anyway.
It's good to see quite a few people getting PIWIS Tester up and running...
For the those who's 996 didn't come with OBC, remember you can turn that option on for free with PIWIS.....and to toggle through the OBC menu you can install the 4th stalk or just wire up a button to toggle......search the archive for the step by step how to on the button/wiring....
I’ve been enjoying learning the PIWIS, although sometimes I scratch my head wondering why something is here and not there.
Cool to have a second tool for checking camshaft deviations, fuel trims, sensors, overrevs, running hours, etc.
I may not pull out the Durametric Pro as often now.
Also nice to be able to activate OBC, auto door locks, change spoiler warning lights, perform guided fault finding (997+), check wiring diagrams, etc.
The PIWIS will help me even more when working on 997 and 991+.
Any tutorials on coding a key fob, with FOB's supplied code tag, and IPAS codes...?
IF you get your IPAS codes you can program the new FOBS using the instructions in the WorkShop Manual on Group 0 Diagnostics page 90-D-68 or I can walk you through on video call..
I have a PIWIS 2 which, as noted, is very finicky to get working. I'm getting one of these even though PIWIS2 is supposed to work better on the older cars I have (996 and 955). The goal would be to have something less finicky to make it easier to use.
The biggest change in the latest PIWIS III 38.250 version is the output in English instead of German.
I've always seen the output in German with the PIWIS II.
I noticed that if you use the older version of PIWIS III it's in German as well.
I speak German, but there are some automotive terms that I know better in English than German since all of my automotive training has been in English.
Yesterday playing with the PIWIS on Luis' 04/98 996 was enlightening.
I've created VALs for both the early 996 and my 2002 and the VALs are very different.
The 1999 VAL is barely half the size of the 2002, but full of interesting info.
Printing the VAL to PDF makes it easy to transfer via USB and then view on a system with a much larger monitor.

Tex , if you think the VAL's are different from the 99 to the 02, just do one on a 997.....it is literally 50 something pages long !!!
Guys remember !! Keep the PIWIS/VCI away from the internet, DO NOT ALLOW IT TO UPDATE .... The software/firmware is plenty updated and updating can cause it to malfunction..
Porsche "killed" the PIWIS 1 tester with an update on purpose to force us to use the PIWIS 2.....30 days after the last update on PIWIS 1 it became dead on purpose...
Just use the PIWIS 3 "as is " and keep it away from the Internet , you are lucky to have it running , it is plenty powerful and updated...

Good info here. I believe there is a registry setting to disable VX Manager to check on new Firmware update. It is always better to be safe than sorry so I would disable the NIC as you recommended.
