Well this is a hypothetical situation, but I’m asking to learn.
edit: okay, I think that makes sense now… So the IPAS code is also coded into the DME as well as the immobilizer module. So it would be very difficult to use only a donor immobilizer module without the paired DME.
And also, you’re right about swapping in a used DME and immobilizer from the same donor car. But maybe the dealership can be convinced that the car has been dismantled?

If you are wanting to learn this is a great opportunity to learn .. Here is picture of the PIWIS VM home screen... The green Icons are PFD's with information on how to use PIWIS tester and the capabilities of it.. There is literally thousands of pages of Info..Once you get the software installed on you Laptop you can read all the info..
Even after reading all the info you will not know all the possibilities, so if a particular scenario/question in mind just ask...
One very unique and helpfull feature on the PIWIS Tester for wiring diagrams for 997 and up is the " Interactive Wiring Diagrams " that are in the Tester. They allow you to highlight a particular wire/circuit or multiple ones and change colors on them to easily trace the circuit in multiple branches on multiple pages... Too bad the 996 wiring is not included in this..
The PIWIS software also contains all the programs for all the Control units on all Models...So the old control unit can be "read" and the info "written" to the new control unit .. or the new one can be programmed with the program in the Tester if the old one is unable to be "read" ..( the old control unit will contain coding specific to the VIN, whereas if the old control unit cannot be "read" the new control unit will be programmed from the Tester and the "coding" will have to done manually to the options of the VIN )
The Icons circled in green or info/how to files in the Virtual Machine , there is more info in the PIWIS program.....the icon circled in red starts the PIWIS Tester...
Load it up and enjoy !!

I have my PIWIS up and running and started to play with the interface in the simulation mode, per Skip's recommendation. For anyone working through the steps, definitely DO use the external SSD and definitely DO download the zipped files individually, one by one. When I tried downloading the files in bulk from the first screen I wasn't able to get the VM to fire up with the image files and the size seemed off vs what was in the provided guide. My dongle should be arriving soon so I'll probably start playing around and exploring a bit more based on what modules show up with the car connected.
I followed the directions - purchased the dongle (due here Jan 5) - and the software/VM. The option to download for me was a single large ZIP file. It downloaded fine, unzipped fine and then I RAR'd it and it opens fine in VMware. I too have launched it and run in simulation mode. So far, so good. Waiting for the dongle to arrive.
First of all, thanks Skip (and the guy on the 997 forum)! I was able to get everything running with the VM and PIWIS simulation. Took a LONG time to download and subsequently unzip everything. Trying to order the dongle I keep getting an error on every ali express site i try with paypal. other sites are $200 plus so i am bit reluctant to forego the $30ish prices on ali express. Anybody have a link that worked using paypal? TIA

My VAS 6154 clone arrived today and it works great.
I had to change the connection type from Auto to USB and manually select the 996, but I was able to read a VAL and program the Alarm to automatically lock the doors.
I’m going to have hours of fun learning the PIWIS III.
OK! I'm at simulation after download hell. After many internet connection fails on my slow AT&T internet I went to my sons house and got it done in a fraction of the time. AliExpress just sent a tracking note saying the dongle is at the local warehouse. Hopefully tomorrow. One thing to note, my SSD is formatted as exFAT and everything works well. The installation notes call for NTFS.
