MY03+ Porsches are using the MOST (plastic fiber optic) bus to connect the headunit to amp to CDChanger back to headunit (it's a ring)....therefore this headunit will not work in such a car.

Do a search for "MOST" or "fiber" in the 996 or Cayenne forums and you'll get more details if you like.

1. $449 has only recently been the price as they are clearing out the Traffic Pro to make way for the new Traffic Pro II. The original price for over 2 years has been $1499.

2. It is a single DIN unit and as such is a direct replacement for all Porsches MY02 or before.

3. You can use it in your MY03+ MOST equipped car as long as you plan on replacing the amp and CD changer along with the head unit. For most people, if you are replacing the head unit, you are more than likely going to swap out amps, speakers, etc... anyway.

4. This is the exact same thing as a Becker Traffic Pro. Becker is owned by Harman International. In the U.S., Becker does not have a widely recognizable brand so the marketing people decided to use the name Harman Kardon.

In fact, this unit is available with a "Porsche" logo on it through a factory dealer. However, it will cost upwards of $1500 or more. Porsche part no: 000 044 900 78. Also requires GPS Antenna, part no. 996 612 970 01.

So it's really only a reduction in $50. But I guess they're getting rid of them for the Traffic Pro II.

 

Will the new Traffic Pro II work in 99-02 996 models? I know the current is a direct replacement, how about the new Traffic Pro II?

I have a Traffic Pro in my 02 Cab and it works really well. I have enabled the AUX-in function of it to use my iPod, so I keep the navigation CD in the head unit slot all the time.

Traffic Pro radios are much like the CDR-220 radio for audio functionality, but I think they sound better, and the FM tuner seems to have better sensitivity. What the Traffic Pro adds is navigation capabilities with prompting from its screen as well as voice prompts in male or female voices in several languages. It comes with a GPS antenna that is installed under the little cover in between the defroster vents. It also has a nifty compass and can tell you where you are at all times even if you are not following a route.

The Unit is completely plug compatible with the CDR-220 and will work just fine in all non-MOST bus cars.



$450 is a good price for the generic model.

The Traffic Pro II does not seem to add that much new functionality except that it probably has a faster processor. The current Traffic Pro is not that slow in calculating a route, so I'm not convinced that the new one is worth waiting for.

 

TP-II is the same Single DIN size as the "old" TP, so it will fit just the same in pre-MOST cars.

V8 - The TrafficPro comes with all necessary parts, assuming you are putting it in a standard single-DIN space. The GPS antenna cord is only 6' long, so depending on what car you are putting it into, you may need to extend it.

Mitch - It doesn't make much sense to me to have a traffic pro as a nav system while still having another head unit. If you want to keep your head unit, I would add the Pioneer touchscreen nav system. Reus Systems does this all day long...

Orient Express is correct in saying that TP-II is not very different. The main difference is a faster processor and 16MB of memory instead of 8MB. There may be some improvement to audio/sound functions, but few details are really known at this point.

However, after having a quick chat with Rick Reus, he said that while the CDR-220 is a "decent" head unit, the TrafficPro is just "mediocre" with respect to sound reproduction. Specifcally, he mentioned that the highs are too harsh. However, you must take Reus's opinions with a grain of salt...

To be fair, 9 out of 10 people could never tell the difference in sound quality between a $100 Sony unit and a $1000 McIntosh head unit, so his opinion of sound quality only applies to a select few people who are audio nuts. Moreover, if you WERE an audio nut, you wouldn't have a CDR-220 or a Traffic Pro anyway!

 

If you have the cd changer with the Porsche does it work with that to control the changer as the factory head unit or is some new fix needed.

Traffic Pro also can control the Porsche CD changer. I have that in mine and XM Radio transmitted to the FM section (not FM modulated through the antenna)
