I just got a call from the dealer, and apparently Porsche has finally come up with a permanent fix for the RMS leak problem. Before installing the new seal, they apply RejeX to the crankshaft--and the key is to let it cure for 12 hours before installing the new seal...
I couldn't help myself...thought I'd try to lighten things up a bit...

Scouser, I think it was about time you went to see an independent. Too many people buy a car in UK because it has OPC stamps. So what? You have just proved to me that some OPC just don't know a thing. You are better off finding someone you can really trust to get the job done. I've yet to find one but I will have no qualms about having a good independent service my RS. The problem is finding one without having to travel to the other end of UK.

OK…I’m going to have to stop reading these posts now.
I have been wanting a 911 since I was around 8 years old (I’m going to be the big 4-oh late this year) and have finally reached a point in my life where I can afford the car, the insurance and won’t get any grief from anyone about it. I find a car that I fall in love with and buy it and then…BAM!…people start telling me that it is going to start leaking oil and Porsche won’t help me.
The car I am getting will have 3 years of warranty left so I not initially concerned. If I still have the car after that and it starts leaking I think I’m just going to put Triumph stickers on it and leave it “marking it’s territory”
Barry (off to stick my head in the sand until the problem goes away)

Hey, Barry - same here. Make 4-0 later this year. I just bought a 996 and all of these stories are giving me the *******. I should stop reading them else I'll jinx my car. I'm not sure I could walk away from Porsche anyways, it's been a life-long love affair.

What a great post this is turning out to be. Having had two english bikes and cars, references to Lucas hit home.
BTW Your comments about the seal are profound. Folks are fixating on the seal.
That is only a condom, it's the pr**ck (who designed it) in Germany who's at fault.

Make fun of Lucas all you want - the Prince of Darkness. Why don't they have cold beer in the UK - because......
My first 2 English cars and a motorcycle had Lucas electronics. The first, a Sunbeam Alpine had a positive ground.
Lucas is still in your cars.

it is amazing that people still buy 911s ... I bet nobody would ever buy a honda accord if it had the same RMS issue.
it is also very interesting that there hasnt been any classs action lawsuit filed for such case knowing there are lots of lawyers who own Porsches.
As much as I love my car, this is pretty annoying. Everytime I see my fellow 996 owner's having an RMS, it makes me pretty upset. Porsche should come up with a solution not a fix-up, and honor all 996 w/RMS issue regardless of the warranty status...

If RMS is truly a manufacturing defect then there must be an interval of mileage that is passed such that the defect will not show up right?
all the RMS leaks seem to happen before 38,000 miles... haven't heard of a FIRST RMS leak happening after this mileage. If you've got the defect, yes I agree it could keep happening... but if you've cleared your first 38,000 mile then your home free right?
If it's about defective tolerances they will show up within a certain time... that's why these leaks show up eary (7,000 miles) on some cars....
what do you guys think about my argument... any engineers in the group?
cheers
Pete

Peter B reported earlier in this thread that his failed at 48,000 miles.
All of this RMS talk is keeping me from buying a 996. That plus the ones I've test driven (both 1999 model years) were not nearly as solid feeling as my '93 RS America. This is all very disappointing because I love the styling of the 996 and would love to have a newer Porsche. But I think I'm staying with what I have.
