Default Cold Air Intake for 996 Carrera

Do anyone know any good cold air intakes for a 2000 996 Carrera?

You might find some threads on this issue. The factory setup is pretty much a CAI design. It funnels air from the decklid spoiler straight to the intake. You may be hard pressed to find a meaningfully better solution.

Rennline started making an enclosed carbon fiber CAI with a deck lid attachment similar to the stock setup. It certainly looks cool. However, I haven't seen any firsthand reviews or videos yet though.

As others have said, the stock rig is pretty hard to beat. You can block the resonator opening to change the noise. I put a 997.1 3.8 airbox in my car, which is supposed to provide gains at the upper end but really mostly just looks better. Very telling that the 3.8 airbox uses exactly the same air filter element as the 3.4 and 3.6 engines; that tells me the stock airbox is most likely not a restriction to airflow.

If you want to put something different in, the Rennline unit is pretty nifty looking. So is the one from Evo Motorsports.

Whatever you do, please do not put a K&N abomination on the car.

The stock air box is perforated on the bottom. The pattern has changed over the years. Until I covered it up, the snorkel wasn't doing anything at idle. I know I am going to get crap on covering up the holes, but so far, it has worked brilliantly. I left a couple open to let the rain out, if I ever have to drive it in the rain.

FWIW, I have a 996.2 and for 22 years I have kept the 996 airbox. Never went to a cold air intake. So instead, I messed with the filters going from the paper oem to the "oiled" BMC and KN filters. Just went back to the paper oem. My engine seems to like it better.

Dont know what you are looking to get from an air intake. If its more sound, then yiu can spend ~$100 and get an elbow and resonator while keeping your inbox. Pretty cheap sound enhancement. See picture.

For ~$1000 you can get the IPD Competition plenum and GT3 throttle body. It will improve the sound. You may need to get a good set of headers that will provide better flow and software to gain power. But it sounds great.

A number of guys have added cold air intakes and they can give you the ins and outs.

I have a 997.1 3.6 airbox just for the aesthetic, the OEM set up is pretty good from the factory. I also have a Plenum and GT3 TB.

I got this kit- not a full intake but with the BMC filter the sound is much better and there is clearly more power and responsiveness. Of course there are aftermarket advantages to the stock setup.

So how much power do you believe you added? Multiple dyno runs have confirmed a very, very small gain with just a BMC filter. The Helmholtz delete does next to nothing for flow volume.

they say 13bhp, I am not sure if I believe that. But the difference in throttle responsive/feel is clear. The sound is also a nice subtle improvement. Together with exhaust and a ECU flash (and plenum upgrade?) I’m sure the sound, responsiveness, and power would be well worth it.

Maybe the below can be helpful to get rough power expectations.
