Hi friends, my porsche 996 have a ticking in the right side of the engine, this noise is in ralenti, with more rpm the ticking dissapear, I changed the oil presure release valve and the problem persist.
I attacht a video with the sound
Thanks for you help
Mine does that on bank 1,cyl 1-3 although not nearly as loud. It sounds like piston slap aka bore scoring to me based on other videos I’ve seen.
Do you have any smoke from the exhaust? Can you scope the cylinders? I’m sure some of the more knowledgeable techs on the board will have some thoughts.
Most will say its bore score and are probably correct based on all the data out there on that issue. However, I have experienced the same ticking randomly its only when not being driven for a while. Its only when cold/not driven for over a week (even then doesn't happen always) and it goes away in 2-3 mins. Mine only happens every now and then, zero smoke, not heard when engine is warm, no debris in last oil change, and not unusual oil usage. I am going to get an analysis of the oil done with SPEEDiagnostix and then scoping from there based on the results.
Jake Raby has a video on lifter tick and how its usually bore score, but he does discuss at length the lifter tick idea (the noise from the lifter snapping back in the video sounds kind of similar to what I have heard on my car and maybe what's in your video)
Mine would do this if not driven for a while. It would start then after a few minutes it would start ticking. Then it would go away a few minutes later.
Injust finished a rebuild and found that one of the cylinder 6 exhaust lifters was bad. It would bleed down over time. My bores were fine but scoring was inevitable since the po Tom coating was starting to flake off.
If you've had engine work done recently, check that the scavenge pumps are oriented properly. I had a similar ticking sound that went away as soon as I corrected the scavenge pumps.
