Default Is this repair quote reasonable?

Hello 996 Community, I recently moved and brought my 2002 Carrera 4 to a dealer in the new area (Eastern PA) for the first time to have two minor (or so I thought) cosmetic issues taken care of. One of them was loose weather-stripping, which took seconds and is done. The other is to replace the reflector (the service person called it a side marker) on the passenger side. He said something about it no longer attaching to the support for it so that support and the side marker need to be replaced. He then told me it would take 4-5 hours of labor to remove the front bumper and fender liner, install the new support and put the bumper back on, which was hard to swallow - 4 hours of labor and a total cost of over $1200 to replace a reflector.

I should mention that I am a woman and have had many instances of going to a car service place for the first time and having them tell me I need really expensive work that I didn't actually need, or that the amount of time needed to do the work would be double or even triple what it should be.

If the estimate below is reasonable I will move forward with it right away. If, however, it is not I would like to know, and why. I would really appreciate your input because I don't know how long things like this take. The email they sent me with the estimate is below.

The replacement of the side marker on your 911 would be approx. $1215+tax assuming once we get the bumper off and don’t find anymore damages or parts needed. The cost break down would be

4hrs labor $980

Parts needed would be;

Retaining strip (1)

Expansion rivet (2)

Side marker (1)

Tapping screw (2)

Spacer (2)

Speed nut (2)

Speed nut (2)

Hexagon socket oval head bolt (2)

Parts total $235

I would need to order the parts which would take a few days to arrive.

Thanks

Honestly i feel that qoute is resonable and based in "book" time. This is an alloted amount of time it takes to repair each item according to a published manual supplied to the dealership.

Even after saying that i feel that it is a rediculoius amount of money but i am capable of making my own repairs. There r many good good porsche body shops and indipendant mechanics that would probably do this job for 50% less.

I am about 20 min south of Philly and can recommend a good shop in Newark, DE but that may be too far. There r a bunch of folks here in the philly area so lets see if we can get u a second opinion.

Also parts can be purchased cheaper used as all these items u hidden but the lamp. Which side of the car is the repair? I can look up the parts for u.

Bumper off is pretty trivial for these cars, 4 hours seems like a stretch even if that's dealer book hours, you can see the side marker removal in the youtube vid below and there's just not a ton going on wrt. holding the marker in place. I'm struggling to picture what could really be broken in there (and, to be clear, I struggle with a lot of things so that's not a super bold statement), if there was some kind of impact in that area maybe it could have broken parts on the car but you'd probably be seeing other issues with the bumper. You can find your local porsche club of America region and get an independent mechanic recommendation from them, otherwise I'm sure someone will turn up a few shop recs in your general area. If you fancy yourself a handy person getting the bumper off yourself wouldn't be out of the question, but its gonna come down to what actually needs to get replaced. Do you have any pics of the issue currently? is the marker just not staying seated?

it will take you longer to watch this video than to change your side reflectors

I'd avoid that shop and learn to do small repairs on your own

Goodness yea sure it may be reasonable base on Porsche pricing but imagine what else you can do with that $1200. If absolute convenience is worth it to you I guess get it done by dealer. May be post a clear video of you removing the side marker, the backside of the marker, and the area where it goes so we can may be walk you through doing it yourself.

It's probably this piece that's broken.

If the bumper is secure I would silicone that thing in before paying $1200, but that's me.

Parts are less than $200 if you do your own shopping. Bumper cover is no more than 30 minutes up, 30 minutes down for a first-timer (watch a couple of videos). Parts replacement is 30 minutes using hand tools.

Great diy for you to begin ownership.

Im guessing from the original post she doesnt have the want or tools to do the repair herself. The bigest issue is the $245 shop labor rate. There r many shops in the $100-120 per hour rate that could do this work.

I also dont think the 4 hrs estimation for the repair is too much if u follow porsches guide lines. Put on lift, remove both front tires, remove front bumper, remove fender liners, replace damaged parts, then reassemble. U dont really need to do all those things but im sure thats how its listed to get the 4hrs.

if we can get a better location, the Penn owners thread can help her out with a better and more resonable shop.

Take it to a BODY SHOP. They charge less than $250 per hour.

In my experience, bodyshops are incapable of remembering either half the clips, retsining screws, push rivets etc. Almost every one ive been to is sloppy as hell

Body shops are terrible. Alignment shops are terrible. Most repair shops are terrible. Contractors are terrible.

My side marker retainer was also broken on one side when i took it off, i felt like it was tight enough that it could stay that way.
i think that quote is likely the correct amount of hours to do what they have listed saying they will do, but as stated the labor rate is high, and all that to fix a side marker is a bit much, when was the last time you had your radiators cleaned of leaves? i'm talking between the condensers and radiator, not just to be vacuumed out from the front? this work can only be done correctly by taking off the front bumper and separating the AC condenser and radiator and giving it a good clean out, i would get this done at the same time, and hopefully they would only charge you one hour or more per side as you are already paying them 4 hours to remove the bumper, then it would really be worthwhile as your engine will get better cooling.

I will still agree that join your local chapter of PCA and seek out a resource of a highly recommended independent shop, buyer beware i always believe in asking questions so that my expectation is met, not just clean out my radiators and they go "yeah we do it with a High Pressure air nozzle from the front" suggest you tell them, i want bumper off and cleaned out properly between the radiator and condenser. (two cents).

For this work I'd go to a regular local Indy Porsche mechanic, its work thats required to do some of the normal services on the car.

Ideally you want to see some modern Porsche stuff in the parking lot, not pre 2000 cars.
Just so you know they are likely familiar with a 996, start with a small job like this and then
work your way up. Also, these cars pretty much require you to learn about them to avoid the
issues you mentioned with the "female" tax being added to the Porsche tax.

And 4 hours is high on the labor. in my opinion, I can probably replace that part on my car in 2 or less depending on my motivation.

Good luck!
