996 transmission mount install fun and games.
Every time I read the jeeper his posts say it gets easier and easier. Just do it He says. Reviewing he mentions it multiple times so I'm going for it. First time he says it will take an hour, then next time he mentions it he says half an hour, then some guy asks and he's like, just do it, 15 minutes.
I'm thinking good, maybe two days for me. Half a day just to get it jacked up Just right on stands and solid. Then, on account of being paranoid, stack the wheels under the car with 4x4s. So if there's a problem will only be partially squished.
One thing for sure is my motor mounts got a little saggy/ neglected and replacing those put a smile on my face so I went and bought a sweet transmission mount removal and replacement tool with a transmission mount.
Note to self. I really want to get the car higher since I'm going to be going under it about 100 times to get the right wrench etc. Contortions every time. Not sure how high I can get it on Jack stands and blocks. I feel like it keeps me young.
Ran into a couple of things.
I was worried that maybe someone had already replaced the mount and everything would be a waste of money and time. Truth time.

I HATE how good a mechanic he is accept when it benefits me personally. But when he's making me feel completely incompetent... I hate it !

I got the one with the two long bolts that press the mount through the transmission. Didn't want to deal with trying to hacksaw or whatever they used to do.
Kind of weird how he's so good with our cars. Like he's done a bunch. This whole time I thought he was a Jeep guy but then when there is a problem he says it's usually this or sometimes that like it's something he's seen 400 times.
And, as long as we're mentioning it it's pretty impressive how high you got your car on the stands. Now I know why. As one of the guys who is going to be operating without a lift , going commando as it were , I need to get put blocks under my Jack and jack stands to get higher but I want things solid. We tough guys need to stick together.

That's my unofficial evaluation also. The webbing is completely torn and the rubber compressed at the top. I was hanging kind of low which, in my book, wasn't the look I was going for.
Now the question is how to align the new mount vertically when it gets pressed in because there is nothing on the tool to get it straight up and down and it might be hard to change it once it's in place.

Use a paint marker or sharpie as line up marks on the tool, bushing and mount. There is some wiggle room if its slightly off. Oh and i am 25 yr jeep guy, but after completely disecting a 996 u learn a lot.

When my engine was out while getting the tranny rebuilt I posted that I was going to get a new tranny mount. I think it was De Jeeper or Texsquirrel that offered the tool to change the bushings. I had no idea what he was talking about because I ordered the whole mount from Sunset Porsche and couldn't imagine why a special tool was needed. After receiving the mount I then realized just the bushings could be changed. My car has a tiptronic so the mount is different from the manual tranny. Too funny as I could've saved a few bucks over ordering the complete mount.
BTW, c didy, get yourself some real floor jacks. I use 2 floor jacks and 4 heavy duty jack stands before getting under the car. And I still hate getting under the car.

I have the AGA tool, but not the Tiptronic adapter yet.
I need to buy one so I can have it on-hand in case I ever need it.

Thank you. Actually, misleading, that photo was after letting the car down and after the jack stands were pulled. Yes, I got some nicer ones but, as usual, would like to get higher. What I need is a some good solid blocks that I can put under my jack and jack stands to bring everything up.

So orienting the mount is not an exact science apparently. Not quite as smart as the jeeper but I drew mental lines on the mount, then laying on my back, under the car, I did my best to eyeball the orientation of the mount, like hanging a picture in the living room wall, if your living room wall is up on Jacks, a little higher in the back than the front, a little bit crooked, and 4 inches from your face. Anyway I second guessed a little but then it seemed to go to together well. The bolts ran freely through the brackets, mount, and out the other side so It all got buttoned up.
Been raining for about 2 months so there's no salt on the road. Therefore Test drive was in order just to see if there's a difference. Yes it shifts better. Thinking it may be because the nose of the transmission isn't sagging like it was.
