Transmission Rebuild Cost

Transmission Rebuild Cost
New here. Found and purchased a 1999 C2, good service records, everything seemed to check out, drove it home. At some point noticed a metallic whirring sound that got worse. I suspected a wheel bearing. Had our home mechanic look at it, and apparently the transmission is full of metal shavings and needs a rebuild. (I have my theories about the seller, but caveat emptor).
Mechanic said finding a transmission was difficult, and could only find one through a dealer for a vomit-inducing $12k+. This seem preposterously high to me. Anybody have recent experience as to whether this is reasonable or not? Have used this indy shop for years, but a second opinion will be obtained before I commit to that kind of spend.

Also know that you can use a G96.01 transmission from a MkII car. Only the pressure plate is different.
I do have a G96.00 that I may be willing to sell. Don't know where you are located.

Have you checked eBay? Considering you basically do not hear about transmission issues on this site, I would have no issues getting a used one.
Manual: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...acat=0&_sop=16
Automatic: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...acat=0&_sop=16
There are plenty on www.car-part.com also.

I'm in Kentucky, but shipping is possible, I assume. Both shops I've spoken to here are recommending going straight to Porsche, which just doesn't seem to me like the right-sized solution for a 23-yo, 100k-mile Sunday car.

I rebuilt my manual in 2020 with California motorsports, $7k total to them (labor for the local shop to remove/replace not included). This included adding a wavetrac differential ($1295) and shipping both ways ($550), I also had pretty much anything they recommended replaced, so ymmv with what actually needs to be swapped.

Manual
Do you recall what the cost was to have your local shop remove/replace? There's another shop here that says they can rebuild it, as well. Just wondering how to decide whether to let them do it and save the shipping or let one of the recommended specialists do it.
Thank you to all for your help so far! This was obviously an unexpectedly large hit right out of the 996-ownership gate!

That is a good but light rebuild. They replaced all the syncros, one slider, couple bearings, and seals. Also only 10 hours of labor which is good for you. No gear sets were replaced and even then it was knocking on $7K plus engine out and back in charges. For the original poster, if the noise is the only thing wrong, this estimate is probably what it's going to be.

CMS quoted me about double the highest quote I got from anyone else. Not passing judgement, just a statement from when I was investigating.
I had requested a quote for the repair of a 3rd and 4th gear grind.
