Default More HP Please...

Which headers, exhaust and clutch assembly is best for a modest gain in HP without making the car to loud? What else can be done to increase HP? Is there a cold air intake anyone would recommend as well?

Thanks!
Scott

It seems that the general consensus is that short of a super charger, nothing will give you significant gains on the M96 motor.

A PDE maybe your best bet.

What is a PDE? I don't want to raise HP a huge amount. I'm shooting for 10%.

Thanks,
Scott

Short of forced induction, there are no real power gains to be had. Take a look at this thread...

Not much can be done to our engines. On the other hand, if you want to make your car as fast as the Grand Am Cup cars on the track, you will need to look into suspension, wheels, tires and then lightening it up a bit. If you are looking for more straight-line speed and do not want to go with a power-adder (ie: Turbocharger, supercharger, etc.) I'm afraid you are out of luck for any serious gains. Exhaust/Headers/Mass Air Flow will only add a few HP. Nothing worth bragging about though

Scott, you're going to spend allot of money of allot disappointment if you think that slapping on a chip, intake, and exhaust will improve the performance of the 996 engine. You'll get a different sound, a lighter wallet, a few stories to tell at the bar. You're seat of the pants dyno might even feel a difference, but you are wasting your money. The 996 motor is very efficient in stock form. Porsche left very little on the table. Using the X-51 option as a bench mark, Porsche makes "only" 25 high rpm hp with their kit. I don't see many folks capable or willing to spend the money to open up the 996 motor for better performance. You might as well buy a supercharger of if you have the cash buy a GT3 motor and tranny. It's a buyer beware market out their with many unsubstantiated power gains. Don't believe someone just because they show you a dyno sheet! Spend you money on driving instruction, i.e. PDE and you will be able to wring out the most performance from your already highly capable vehicle.

For going faster, perhaps the best investment to be made is in taking a driving course. Everyone I've spoken to has said that this is the best investment they've made.

There is company called EVO Motor Sports that supercharges 996s for about $11k installed.

Many people have done it and love it.

I stuck a 'Rennlist' decal on my left rear side window and it definitely made a noticeable difference.

Learn to shift better. We all can improve. Even the test driver on the Porsche website driving the GT3 needs some practice. Actually, he was horrible.

It takes courage to recommend a PDE in a forum :-) but... it may actually be the best recommendation for many people.
