Also in for one! I've got a temp sensor port on the UIDS that's begging to be utilized!

lmao everybody thirsty for oil temps, myself included. Its frustrating that the expensive obd2 tools can pull that value out but a generic scanner can't, would be much simpler to put the display in and tie it to the obd2 port right there

@plpete84 I’m pretty sure the port on the UIDS is there to fit a conventional aftermarket temp gauge like the VDO unit that includes a sensor. My system taps into the OEM porsche temp sensor in the engine at the DME, and doesn’t use another sensor. I doubt the two will be compatible. Check with @Porschetech3 to be sure, he completely understands how mine (and his own) works.

@dsbl I’m skeptical that the high end systems can pull oil temps out of the obd2 port. They may show an oil temp gauge on their dashboard, but I doubt it actually pulls data from a 996. I may be wrong, and I’d like someone to explain to me how they do it. Maybe you know someone who has one?
Maybe it’s possible on other vehicles, but I’ve never seen it on a 996. I’d love to learn how as it would certainly simplify installation.

The oil temp sensor port on the UIDS is a 10mm thread to fit the AIM Oil Temp Sensors...

When using the Factory oil temp sensor the port will not be needed..

High end "scanners" use the Porsche specific protocol ( like a private number, and they have to pay for the privilege ) to query for oil temp info...

Generic OBDII scanners use the Gov mandated obdii protocol ( like a non-private number ,and its free to use ) to query for oil temp info but the info is not available on obdII for 996 but it is for 997..

Yea I'm almost positive piwis or durametric can get the value. I used a PID scanner with my bluetooth obd2 reader just to check if it was hiding in some non standard value, but no luck.

Yes, PIWIS and Durametric can display oil temp on 996 through the Porsche Specific Protocol..

Oil temp PID is not a Government mandated obd2 PID , so whether or not it is included in the obd2 data stream is at the discretion of the factory programmer. Unfortunately the factory programmer didn't include it in the 996 obd2 data stream, but DID include it in the 997 obd2 data stream...

@Coopduc I'm happy to review and suggest edits to the documentation, I work in software engineering and read at the 7th grade level, at least. Heh. Just send me a pm if I can help I will.

Ok, I finally finished the first 10 units and ready to ship. I’ll be sending PMs to all who have expressed an interest.
The delivered product will include the gauge ( for the dash), controller ( to be hidden behind the batwing), all wiring and connectors, and installation instructions (6 pages!)
$80 free shipping.

Here are some pics

Coopduc - Oh baby! Please shoot me a pm when you get the second batch ready, or you have any of first production unspoken for. This will be a fun project. Then I’ll be able to get a proper read on when I can let ‘er rip!

Coop,

Just got back from a dinner meeting. I'll settle up tomorrow morning thru your payment options. Thanks for making the gauge. We needed it!
