I have been shopping for a mk2 cabrio. Each one has a smell that is sour, not an engine or gasoline smell, almost sweet but definitely offensive. It appears both in the A/C heat is on and also outside after a drive. Could it be due to the cars sitting with out being driven or is it just part of the aging of a 20 year old car. I previously had an 04 GT3, didn’t have the same odor. Coupe vs cab?

Sounds like those cabs got wet. Musty wet carpet smells maybe?

Heater core is leaking. The "sweet" smell is antifreeze. Or the coolant tank is leaking.

That is exactly what my car smelled like when the heater core started leaking.

does it verge on cat pee? Could be mold in AC evaporator. Make sure the drain tube is not clogged. Mold in the vents/ducts also can contribute to smells like that.
