Default Not Everyone Can Be a Mechanical Engineer, but.............

Lately there has been a LOT of misinformation posted as "facts". Often the poster has no real idea of the definition of terms he / she is using. As a mechanical engineer with over 30 years experience, I cringe when I read these "facts". Here is a VERY informative handbook that will explain a multitude of automotive technical terms, definitions, and facts.

Bosch Automotive Handbook

I'm sure that there a better websites that describe the contents of this little jewel. It should be required reading by the "experts" on these boards.

I think you will all enjoy it.

Now lets not mix our BHP, SAE, DIN, JIS, or any other definition of horsepower again.

Cheers,

Default cringe?

You mean you cringe when you see a pictorial essay of a dashboard being ripped apart to connect to wires that are readily available in the console or simply reaching in behind the dash and pulling out the wire in question. Or, lengthy fuse discussions on a 7.5 amp circuit when the draw on the component in question is 50mA.

I used to cringe as well but now I am simply an observer.

Thanks for the link on the Bosch Book. Although I believe all German EE's should be banned from working in the car industry, it looks like a sensible read.

Thank you for identifying the reference book. I have one on order and will soon be confident that my comments will rise above the DIN.

Fred,

I have no engineering background. In fact, I'm glad to have made it through the required math courses to get to my current profession. I just put in an order for the book so I can separate the wheat from the chafe.

Eric,

I got my little blue book off of the shelf last night for a look. I probably only understand about 5% of what's in this book. But you will find a lot of interesting things. The definitions and conversions from one measuring system to another are invaluable. You'll find topics on everything from electronics to aerodynamics. You might have to be an engineer to really appreciate what's there.

Cheers,

This document is published by Bentley Publishers and is now offered in the 6th Edition, with even more pages.

They also offer other interesting documents and materials.

Thank you Wingless. If you hadn't brought this thread back to life I wouldn't have found about this great book. I just placed an order for the 6th edition.

For the past tense, we all those who are already gon. Enjoy the book.

Merely an observation. Would you like me to make one on your attitude?

It would not be a stretch to conclude that both our observations were not appreciated. I'm cool with being buds.

Talking

60 dollars to learn about a car? What are you guys crazy? That could instead be spent on an orange cap for 30bhp gains. You guys are crazy.

Seriously, thanks for the link. I ordered the 6th ed. It's a nice reference to have and lord knows I could learn a boatload more about the car I drive.

I'm good with that. I wasn't being derogatory with my first comment - just suprised when I saw the date of the initial post.
