This could lead to a yearly pilgrimage; definitely an online spreadsheet, possibly a dedicated website/forum

And we’ll take up donations to fly in Lee Sibs

(I see he’s not on the list yet I’ll take care of that)

Lots were (are) raced that is true, but if any 911 can survive two decades of club racing it’s MY1999

Its the drifting scene in Encinitas, CA that always takes these out. Two decades of artificially depressed pricing, no traction control, and no PSM: the early ‘99 was born to drift!

Now we know. Less than 4K early-build coupes worldwide. Amazing. I'll conservatively venture less than 1K of those imported by PCNA

Folks these are very low numbers... saw it here first: RENNLIST.ORG!
Im not a VIN expert, but are they serially numbered by US and RoW, in which case you could have two 99 cars with the same serial number just different country codes?

US/CAN - WP0AA2996XS6 12345
EU/RoW - WP0ZZZ996ZXS1 12345

I’m no expert but Cars are made in vin sequence no matter which country they are destined for.

There is a country code indeed but The vin number continues to tick up and represents the “next car off the line”

Makes total sense ✅

So we’re back to postulating early-build 996 production total was approximately 1/2 that of the GT’s

IE back to total shock

Surprised we never thought before to simply count the 09/98 VIN serials as the cap for the 11/97-08/98 run

HUGE shoutout to @mstakacs for posting his astronomically rare 09/98 “amber” VIN that popped the cork on this revelation

AND turns out his car might have been the very last early-built 99; or at very least in the final handful

TURNS out 08/98 ended on a Monday, and 09/98 ended on a Wednesday. I’ll theorize the factory remained open that first week in September and closed Friday, 09/04/1998, for the annual monthly holiday (that would thus run thru the last two days of October). Thus there could be four-days production of 09/98 early-build cars out there; and @mstakacs is one

It fits

Please share if you figure it out. My 9/98's VIN is 3653 and I don't believe it was an amber car (and neither were the headlights on the 996 GT1 ). I'll have to look at my lights to see if they have embossed build dates in order to determine whether they are original to the car.

Are you basing that off the Sport Design wheels that I don't think was an option on the early amber cars.

Again all pure conjecture on my part.

Basing what? I’m not sure I follow you.

how do we know that the ambers were original to the car? There is no option code for them, and this is the first I’ve seen of a car after 7/98 with them I think.

I’ll add my three, and another that I know of, and then there are a handful in the Vesuvio registry I started.

Also I believe I read that it is an X51 car. Which is UBER rare for a 3.4
