Bd, what does MY stand for? Mid-year? I see it a lot.

Does this have anything to do with the fire? Why would a mid-year '98 996 be the one to have? Just curious, thanks

So if the 996 production run began in Sept '98, and my car was built in Jan '98, you're saying anything prior to Sept '98 is part of the 993 production line? I have ambers and all too. Benefits of being a part of the 993 production line??

Edit: disregard, @bdronsick just read your post on benefits of the '99 - cool stuff, thanks for writing that up.

Where is this documented? In my experience the non-sequentiality occurs between USA and RoW cars.

Interesting. Are there any others documented as “out of order” besides this one (from 8 years ago)? I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I’ve seen Porsche mess up options stickers, CoA’s, PPS’s, etc. As I’ve said before, they were (are?) a mom and pop operation and mid-year production changes in the past seemed to be common. Drawing a line in the sand on certain aspects is nearly impossible. I guess I’m extremely skeptical of some of the info herein without more substantiation.

But this is the internet, right? Where facts are free and we are free of facts.

The line was drawn by Porsche with the amber lenses. We’re just observing and commenting on it

That thread was ten years ago, when 996 had bottomed out in the teens, like SC & 964 had before it

996 “collecting” is diff’rent strokes for different folks these days

So says you. But you/we still don’t affirmatively know where that “amber line” was drawn. We have a poster above who has a higher VIN than I, the same build date, and supposed original ambers. And you have my car who’s factory equipment for ambers/clears is unknown, but with a lower VIN and identical build date. To prove your theory, you point to an old post showcasing a possible example of one.

So I say let’s all stop with the fangirling and hyperbole and simply show the facts/details as we know them. Maybe someday the big picture will reveal itself. Maybe not. Maybe you’ll be prescient beyond doubt. Maybe not.

We see no 996 builds prior to 11/97, nor any 996 builds through 08/98 with original clear lenses. The factory where 993 & 996 were temporarily assembled together was then shut down month of 09/98 for yearly holiday. And then we see no 993 build dates after 08/98, and we see no original amber lenses 996 build dates after 08/98 (except one anecdotal reference by a non-original owner with no proof; which we have provisionally placed on the registry as indeterminate)

One cannot go back in time, but where there has been a fairly definitive collection of “fossils”, and their placement in chronological order, one can certainly operate based upon reasonable assumptions as a practical matter. Scientists do this, and really not much more

You are of course free to start a new “Ambers” poll and start over again. But a quick history search will reveal myriad examples of both lenses types, and all pointing to the conclusions above; and again I will be the first respondent 🤑

Unfortunately I don’t see where that car is listed as “provisional” or “indeterminate.” If you want this list to withstand scrutiny and to be a reliable reference document, then I would think that you would want to clean up that small part. If you don’t care about it standing the test of time, then what’s the point?…selfish market bumps?

Fwiw, I think the 996 world would do well to have a steward like Jeff Coe (of 968 fame) or Rob/Jim/Roger/etc (of 928 fame).
