I am about to do the same on my car.
The K&N is plug and play, it does not change the throttle body, I don't see why the OEM airbox would not plug on the OEM throttle body...

I purchased mine with a K&N installed by the PO. I decided to go back to stock and no, it doesn’t require any parts to do it. Just swap the units.

That said, I put the K&N back on after a week or two. I missed the sound and butt dyno performance. It really did “feel” better than stock to me. The sound was the biggest thing I missed, though.

If u think the tb has be replaced with a larger one the u should by some calipers and measure it to make sure. An approximate measurement does not help. If u can get an acurate measuremnt on the outside diameter im sure someone here can confirm if its factory.

I'm aware that many 996 owners slam the K&N air filter, either as a result of direct experience or due to the volume of negative anecdotal postings. When I bought my 199 996 back in 2013, it came with a brand new uninstalled K&N kit. Then I started reading all the negative reviews and was reluctant to install it. I ultimately did install the kit, and other than an initial CEL which I simply erased, have never had a bit of trouble with it. I like the way it looks and sounds, period. YMMV.

They simply don’t catch as much dirt as the pleated oem one does. Fine for a race car, not so much good for a rear engine car. Probably not much if at all performance increase. The oem filter is pretty big for how much ho the engine has.

Ive not researched the K&n topic much, but didn't the factory gt3 cup cars, come with a cone k&n type filter, mounted directly on the TB?
Why are K&n/ CAI's not RL approved?

Gt3 has an air box with a bigger filter

K&N is only as good as the care it gets.. If you service them correctly they are great,,
get sloppy under or over oiling and they can leak dust or get oil in the intake on stuff that doesn't like it.

I buy 2 for a vehicle so I can correctly clean and oil ,, biggest thing is they need hours to dry after
cleaning and the oil needs to be put on in multiple light applications. I store the one waiting to go in in a
plastic bag. (done the same thing with motorcycle foam air filters for years.

Not perfect for every situation.. but for specific cars, with the right setup they rock.
I don't run one on the Porsche because its MAF is too easy to foul..
My MAP based LS swapped jeep is running one..

Thanks. You are correct, for street production GT3s. The "CUP" race cars all used a filter mounted directly to the TB, hence why I'm unclear as to why there's so much negativity towards their use? Is it a Metzger vs M96 thing?🤷‍♂️

That's the same as the Turbo airbox and filter - it's good for at least 750 HP with as close to zero restriction as you can get.

In addition to heat, filters vary in how much resistance to air flow (pressure drop across the filter, lower is better) versus how much dirt they let through.

The following isn't the most scientific and definitive source, but he does a the best job testing products of anyone I've seen on YouTube, and it's easy to see the difference in filters in his tests. Yes, K&N may let alot of air through and sound great, but that's because they aren't filtering much at all. Also, generally it seems that if our cars don't really benefit alot from the extra air flow without a tune or other work, then a K&N gives a good sound, at the expense of dirt in your engine.
Compare the graph at 7:10 (air pressure drop) to the ones at 13:42 and 14:00 (5 micron particles allowed through). The K&N don't actually do much filtering.

If the air filter is mounted directly to the throttle body, then there is no MAF meter to get contaminated.

What isn't shown very well in those gt3 cup photos is the interior decklid. They surround the filter and feed the motor air from outside of the engine bay.

This will give you an idea of what I mean:
