Thinking about selling my millennium
Hi 996 community posting as I’m debating selling my very much loved Millennium Edition just as the market is nuts and my car is legitimately one of the nicest driver class 996s around. I’ve got over $40k into it. It has 108k miles. I bought it in 2015 sight unseen which was frankly idiotic and when I picked it up it was in rough shape.
What it had going for it (bought it with 84k):
- it’s a millennium (#281/911)
- the clutch and IMS had been done at ~75k (I’ve got the receipt)
- all original paint (it was in rough shape but thank god, the paint meter readings confirmed zero resprays)
Unfortunately the seller had lied to me about the condition. The pain was very scuffed, it was full of dings, the front bumper was/is pretty chipped up and the wooden trim inside was toast. It also had tint that was deteriorating. I immediately realized what a mistake I had made and decided to take a deep breath and spent the next 3-4 years making everything right:
cosmetics:
~5 full paint corrections and the last 2 years I’ve gotten it detailed and ceramic coated 2-3x a year
- removed the tint
- ~6 trips to PDR guys it is VERY straight
- found a set of the “chromed” wheels in good shape (these cars don’t look right w/o them)
- spent over a 100 hours cleaning and conditioning the leather with leatherique. It has patina but is very soft and happy
- found a set of hardback natural leather sport seats from rennlister 911AL in excellent shape. Had them color matched to the car in violet chromaflair. Very unique
- had the tequipment shifter trim painted to match as well
- just added a set of RUF pedals
- replaced plastic dash speaker trim with natural leather speaker trim
- replaced plastic door speaker trim with light maple trim I found (this was early on and I was still learning about sourcing parts and what would look right).
- replaced cracked steering wheel with all natural leather steering wheel in mint condition
- had cracked door pocket lids restored by Craft Customs
- had cracked door pulls restored by Craft Customs
- Porsche roof rack and roof box bought new at sunset
- fabspeed dual tip exhaust tips (shinier than in photo)
mechanical upgrades/fixes:
- all door window switches/regulators replaced
- nothing else has gone wrong with it. Incredibly reliable.
- new water pump and low temp thermostat
-gear oil and diff oils changed 2x since I’ve owned
- duh oil changes with Motul never more than 3500 miles between (have pristine black stone report from 2 months ago)
- techart coilovers, installed and corner balanced at Sunset. GT3 spec.
- new Zimmerman rotors and new factory pads last year
- eibach sways and adjustable end links
- fabspeed headers
- 200 cell cats (maxspeed) these were a group buy, O2 spacers installed, no CEL
- found pristine factory mufflers with no rattle and had them fister hacked.
- Evomsit stage 2 tune
- 15mm rear wheel spacers
- new factory motor mounts like 2 years ago (semi solids are awful!)
Stupid but enjoyable upgrade:
- ~$4K +custom stereo system including high end amp and Porsche specific sub box in back.
I’ve also got a rennline extinguisher mount I’m going to install and a new extinguisher. Plus brand new natural brown floor mats.
what it needs:
- tires
- driver side front CV joint.
I would submit that this car runs, drives and sounds as good as, if not better than any non-mezger 996 on the market.
Given the market lately I feel confident I could get $35k for it. That wouldn’t be enough. If someone were to push $40k however, I might be tempted.
Please save any “you’re dreaming” posts because I know I’m not and I’m very much inclined to keep the car. I love it.
since then I have (I’m sure I’m missing some things as the list is long and I’m not going through all my receipts today):

Keep it. Don't sell it. It isn't about money. You will forever regret selling it.

I would like to hear what people think. Should I just keep it? Should I get some good photos taken and post it far and wide for sale? Should I (gag) try to post it on BAT?
What’s the point if everything is inflated? Or can nice 997 cabs be had for relatively good prices?

You are way, way too low!!! Let me condition that on clean over-rev report and engine maintenance records. Manuals are in demand, you have a limited edition 911, I would say min of $40k.

An honest and forthright seller with a well maintained car should add to the car's value. BaT seems to be the place for the best result, talk to them and see what reserve they suggest. I've never sold or bought a car on that site so I'm not 100% how it works. Best of luck. I'll be watching for it should you decide to sell it.

Put it on BaT.
You're likely to get more than $40K.
But what would you replace it with, and how much would THAT cost?

No offense but I’m in the “you’re dreaming” camp.
108K and it needs tires.
And an IMS bearing replacement because the one from 2015 has timed out.
You don’t have spark plugs, coil packs, AOS, fuel injectors, coolant tank or water pump listed on your mechanical upgrades/fixes.
But hey, put it on BAT and prove me wrong
Edit: you do have a water pump replacement listed.

Most of the items mentioned above are valid though I think most 996 that change hands need many if not most of those items done sooner than later. IMO if you want to get top $, pay to have your own car bore scoped from the top and bottom, have it all documented, and display the results. Someone paying for a limited edition 911 with >100k miles might be willing to pay up if bore scoring hasn't hit by then. I think the potential return for the money spent would be significant. They only made 911 of these!! Doesn't mean a lot to me but I'm not your target market.
