Trying to figure out an exhaust set-up that sounds just right

Of course this is all a matter of opinion.....Most after market set-ups I've heard are tonally bad and too loud. The stock set-up sounds really good tonally but is just too quiet. I think what makes an exhaust sound good to me is the same thing that makes a certain combination of notes that make up a chord sound good. Porsche clearly spends a lot of effort to make a musical exhaust/intake sound. To me it sounds like there are more than 6 cylinders. Anyway, maybe just using 200 cell cats will be enough. Hopefully it wont ruin the tone

My 03 4s is in the shop for new injectors, new coil packs/plugs, UAOS install, 997 GT3 shifter upgrade and a few body trim replacements. Had the engine/tranny dropped and clutch and replacement IMS Retrofit (2 yrs, 34k miles) look fine. Turns out one cat is shot and so I'm having a new set of SOUL Sports Cats installed. Very curious to hear how they sound along with the factory sports exhaust. Will post follow-up when car is back and I can better comment on any noticeable difference. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Literally heard good things from a 1.5” pipe fister mod and 200 cell cats. Easily enough done. Smaller diameter pipe than normal mod and it sounded deep, without raspiness. The PSE is real hard to beat though.

Gundo/Fister hack is basically PSE on full time. Best bang/buck if you ask me.

I put on the top gear sports mufflers (They have a “Mild” one as well) and haven’t regretted it one bit. They’re great value compared to other options. Sound is a little more aggressive than stock but really wake up at higher rpm. Some have mentioned a slight drone at hwy speeds but I’ve been on 3+ hour drive and wasn’t bothered (This is in a cab). I’ll post some video tomorrow if you’re interested.

I have Tubi mufflers on my car. I am so lucky they came with the car, and somehow PPI didn’t note it, or the seller. So it was a great surprise when it got delivered to me.
The Tubi system sounds incredible. Under light acceleration, it sounds very close to stock. Nothing crazy. Cold start, there’s a nice rumble. Once revs drop down, or on a warm start, sounds pretty stock. Driving, the more you dig in, the more you hear from the exhaust.
The best part for me, is the little revs, just a few taps of the pedal, when letting the clutch out in first/reverse or pulling into my garage slowly. My wife said it sounds like a panther growling. It does.
The downshifts/rev matches sound great. You also get a nice “burbling” (and an occasional little pop here and there) when you let off the gas pedal.
When you put your foot down it sounds great, it’s as loud as I want it to be without being annoying. Also there is NO DRONE. AT ALL.
My favorite way to drive is windows down and sunroof open and let it rip. I haven’t even had it a month yet, not daily driven, racked up 600 miles so far and loving every minute.

I am working on that! I have a few, taken on my iPhone. They actually sound pretty damn good through speakers or headphones…but I want to compile some high quality samples and post online to help others make a decision. There are a ton of Fabspeed videos. A ton of Fister videos. Not too many Tubi vids for NA 996. Forget about if you want to find a Tubi system on NA 996.2, WITH sport cats. I think I may need to purchase some 200 cell sport cats to install, so I can provide BOTH Audio samples. Yeah… For the greater good, ya know…

I have Agency Power headers + Fister 1.5” modded mufflers. It certainly sounds great.
BUT!! For about a week, I had no mufflers. That sound was obnoxious. And glorious. Somehow, it ruined the more polished and respectable sound of my current setup. My ears want more.
It was like one weekend with that girl (or guy) you’d never take home to mom. You know you couldn’t put up with it every day. But wow, was it fun.
I might add 200 cell cats to help get just a little louder. 🙂

For a deeper sound the fister mod exhaust is hard to beat in my opinion. The previous owner did the mod on stock mufflers and this is what they sound like under load -
I've also driven a car with stock mufflers but with 200 cell cats and an x-pipe set up. It was definitely louder and provided a much higher pitched tone above 4k rpms. I liked that as well. Different but still good. At start up, the car with x pipe was a good deal louder too.

Aaron got it, so much fun driving with him. And when I hear the sound the car makes right when I’m making the pass, always puts a grin on my face.
For anyone wanting all the loud exhaust they can get - just take a trip to the YT in my sig… either muffler deletes or later videos, little tiny bullet mufflers with turndowns to keep it under 93DB as measured on one of the tracks I go to, with the deletes only, I was right on the edge depending where they were measuring on any given day.
Stock cats in all examples.
