Default Cat bypass: will it ruin my car for moving or resale?

Reputable local shop says my cats are bad. They recommend fabspeed cat bypass for sound, performance, and cost, and say no OEM cat replacement is available.

if I get a fabspeed cat bypass, I’m worried about resale value, possibility of issues passing emissions, etc. currently live in atlanta and they say it won’t be an issue here, but that’s one guy’s belief.

Can anyone speak with experience about emissions, resale value, etc with a cat bypass?

thanks!

It's a misdemeanor in Florida.

Knowing your location and year/model would help...

Just the cat bypass will cause your car to fail emissions in any state that requires a test.
It will also give you a constant CEL.
If you add the mini catalytic converters (https://www.fabspeed.com/universal-9...nverters-pair/) it will pass some states emissions tests and you won't get a CEL.
It will fail any that require a visual inspection.
Resell could be affected if you don't replace the cats before selling.

There are cheap OEM style replacements available here: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...converter,5808

You can also get a x-pipes with 200-Cell Cats(https://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-996...ipe-1999-2004/) for higher flow, but again it might not pass emissions tests without the mini-cats.

You won't pass emissions if the secondary O2 sensor stay intact.

You can buy aftermarket cats for half the cost of the Fabspeed part.

Lots of people run the Top Gear or Design911 200 cell cats(same product as far as i can tell); affordable and mine seem well made. I don’t know how effective they are in terms of emissions but have to be better than nothing.

Just got our first California smog check. I was surprised the tech did a thorough look on top and under the engine, and I couldn't clearly see but his computer screen seemed to have pictures of items for him to look for. If we weren't 100% stock we may not have passed, and previously when our beautiful Jag failed a smog check we seemed to have been put in a special program where we had to do it every year to prove to them we were ok.

If you can live without your cats/car a few weeks there is an option to send out your cats to have 200 CELL honeycombs put in and retain the stock look and pass emissions.

I’m guessing most states have a similar law. I have personally seen it prosecuted.
MOTOR VEHICLESChapter 316
STATE UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL
316.2935 Air pollution control equipment; tampering prohibited; penalty.—
(1)(a) It is unlawful for any person or motor vehicle dealer as defined in s. 320.27 to offer or display for retail sale or lease, sell, lease, or transfer title to, a motor vehicle in Florida that has been tampered with in violation of this section, as determined pursuant to subsection (7). Tampering is defined as the dismantling, removal, or rendering ineffective of any air pollution control device or system which has been installed on a motor vehicle by the vehicle manufacturer except to replace such device or system with a device or system equivalent in design and function to the part that was originally installed on the motor vehicle. All motor vehicles sold, reassigned, or traded to a licensed motor vehicle dealer are exempt from this paragraph.
. . .
(5) Any person who knowingly and willfully violates subsection (1) shall be punished as follows:
(a) For a first violation, violators shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083, except that a motor vehicle dealer shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
(b) For a second or subsequent offense, violators, including motor vehicle dealers, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. In addition, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles may temporarily or permanently revoke or suspend the motor vehicle dealer license authorized pursuant to the provisions of s. 320.27.

Side note: when I built my FFR Cobra, I used a 1999 Mustang Cobra engine. Since Florida titled it as a 1965, had to meet emission requirements for that year (none). Thus, legally allowed to not have cats and flash emissions from ECU.
