I second going straight to the Fister/Gundo. I just did it, and am shocked by the transformation. It is way better than the sound in the videos can reflect! It'll be cheaper than at least one airbox option you mention (maybe as cheap as 1/3 the price if you can pull the mufflers yourself) and make 10x the difference. More "gargle," no additional hiss/suck/intake noise (which isn't for everybody), and not obnoxious at all.

I have Fisters and agree that it's the best mod you can do. The airbox trick gives a little more of a throaty sound above 4k ,but the change with this is subtle, On the other hand, the Fisters are amazing.

The Hemholtz delete is a great mod to accompany the Fister or Gundo exhaust. It definitely adds a noticeable throatiness to the mid range that is very enjoyable on longer gear pulls. Add it's extremely inexpensive. As far as intake mods go Raby says the 997 airbox is the best performing one they have come across in their testing.

What is the benefit of the 997 airbox?

What are the beneifits of replacing the 996 airbox with the 997's? Other than
aesthetics and possibly induction sounds.

Bbiela, what have you ended up doing so far with your air?

Performance increase due to airflow, although not a big one, has been reported by Mr Raby. Sure, anecdotal evidence because it’s just Raby’s word, but as per thurstonpowers3 post, that you quote; Mr Raby has tested too many airflow combos to not know. And he does say that the 997 airbox is a better performer, several times and places. If you want specific data, I’m sure you can open a ticket with FSI and ask for the proprietary test results. And best of luck with that.

so far nothing. I’m about to order a Fister exhaust and they have the Flat 6 Motorsport cold air intake. Trying to figure out best option.

What's your end goal? People say 997 airbox and to me it's only an aesthetic feature. Did orange cap mod and can't say notice a difference, but it cost zero otherwise wouldn't have done it. I changed from stock to BB exhaust and that was by far the best and fairly easy reversible improvement for regular driving.

Depends on what you want and your expectations.

I have heard the Fister/Gundo hack mod on Mike Murphy's car and it sounds incredible. I am running FVD 200 cell cats and sport mufflers so I get plenty of sound.

I have what I think is the Flat 6 cold air intake elbow kit, but I put it on with the IPD competition plenum and GT3 throttle body a number of years ago. The combination creates an incredible intake (sucking) sound. Doubt it would add much sound without the plenum/throttlebody combo. Also really didn't add any performance gains. However it did change my powerband a bit, taking away low rpm per and adding it to the midrange and upper range.

While I have read about and looked at the 997 airbox, I haven't added it. Don't know if it adds any improvement in air flow, but it does certainly looks better. Every time I think about spending 400 on a used airbox on eBay, I decide to spend the 400 on something else on the car. As an example, I just decided on titanium wheel studs instead since I went from 7 mm spacers to 15 mm.

Hope that helps.

Just more glorious noises

This winter the plan is exhaust and a deep sump along with a new shift ****. The IPD and throttle body are on the roadmap along along with the Numeric SSK and cables. @GC996 hopefully I'll meet you and Mike at some of the events next year, you guys have been a wealth of knowledge as I'm figuring out this build.

Sounds like you are in the Chicago region. Love to get together with you. Plenty of non-track events this off-season as well as track events coming up this spring. PM me with your contact info when you get the chance and we can connect. Chicago region is loaded with good events and good people.

The Fister mod can be done for as little as $715 skipping the ceramic coating and other extras. New bolts, etc. are another $50 from Fister. First mod to do.
