Default Anyone running conventional oil?

I was watching some videos and they had techs. Talk about running conventional oil vs syn im there 996 carreras.
idicated it was better for leaks on older cars.
aslong as the oil was changed every 5000km or 3to 4000 miles.

Thoughts? Anyone running reg oil?

Um, no. DO NOT run non-synthetic oil. Driven DT-40 for normal use.

If you doubt me, go over to Bobistheoilguy.com, the petroleum engineers on that site will set you straight.

I'm running Driven GP1 15w-40 (conventional synthetic blend) on the recommendation of my engine builder... https://www.drivenracingoil.com/gp-1...mance-oil.html

Conventional oils were better in leaky engines about 20 years ago, but that's no longer a thing.

I run conventional oil in my 1999 996 Cab with 79k mi (purchased in 2014 w/64k mi)., and in my 1999 Boxster Base with 89k mi (purchased in 2013 w/55k mi). I use Castrol GTX 20w-50, and change oil and filter at 4k miles. Neither car leaks or smokes, nor do I have to top up the oil in between changes. Both cars are weekend drivers and I like them very much.

Thank you!! Did you always use conventional since you have had them? If so why did you start?

I've used conventional oil since I've owned them, both cars were using conventional oil according to the previous owners. I change the oil and filter frequently, always cut open and inspect the filter, plus I'm a cheap S.O.B. whose been wrenching for 45+ years and just can't wrap my mind around the price charged for a quart of synthetic. Also, I've read/heard that it was not a good idea to switch a car from conventional to synthetic, but okay to switch from synthetic to conventional, or is it the other way around? Where am I?

I remember reading my 1999 owners manual and at that point the said you could use either conventional or synthetic oil.

There are soooo many developments in the oil world in the last 20 years. What Porsche said 20 years ago is moot now...

I’ve always heard synthetic offers better viscosity and protection; scored votes, IMS, chain guides; are all way worse to deal with than a leaky seal.

I assume you’ve got a leaky RMS, save your pennies and take care of the clutch, IMS, and rms. Switching now probably won’t save you from the inevitable.

I just run "conventional" synthetic oils in all of my vehicles and haven't been converted to the DT40 and oil analysis camp for my 996 yet.

Don't know whether it's relevant or not but all of my vehicles are relatively "old" including my 2000 C4 Cab, 2002 Ford F250 diesel, 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder, 2008 BMW 335i and 2012 MB ML350.

No leaks or even noticeable oil consumption in any of these vehicles between oil changes yet, except for the 996 (1 qt in 2k miles that I just topped off w/Castrol 5-40 synthetic) which I've been told elesehwere here is "normal" for a 911. Manometer reading for my 996 is below -5 inch/H20 which is w/in spec. So, no concerns about a bad AOS in my 996 yet either.
