Default 996 C4S (3.6l) "hot rod" advice required

I have 2003 996.2 C4S coupe with around 133,000 km (83,000 miles), in Toronto. The car is fantastic, with the PSE option. Been in long term ownership, and plan to continue.

I was thinking about the X51 power kit, but my dealer says they are no longer available.

I am considering boring the car. Have read there are 3.8l, 3.9l and 4.0l options (but it appears most are for GT3 motors).

Has anyone done something like this? I don't want to re-invent the wheel. Looking for a factory quality naturally aspirated boost to power, from an experienced, reliable and trusted source, preferably in the Toronto area.

Also, if anyone has a lead on an X51 power kit, please drop me a note.

I don't know anything about what is available in Toronto or Canada. Send your car to Jake Raby at Flat Six Innovations (FSI), write him a blank check and wait a year. Best way to go IMHO.

Turn3 In Langley, BC does a package of going 3.4 to 3.8, or 3.6 to 4.0. I'm picking up my new 3.8L C2 in two weeks, and I can't be more excited.

With the currency exchange right now, it's probably still cheaper to ship/drive to BC and ship/drive back.

Feel free to PM me.

I am not sure about shops in Toronto, but I think there is a shop in Calgary (Alpine Autowerks) that partners with Hartech for their M96/M97 cylinder replacements, but I have not had any experience with them in any capacity.

When I needed my engine rebuilt to a 4.0L several years ago, I shipped it off to Jake @ FSI and have nothing but great things to say about the experience. However the exchange rate was a bit more favorable then, than it is now.

If you have any questions about the experience at all or about the end result, feel free to PM me.

If you are serious, you should sell your running engine to someone who needs one, and take their core in trade.
Then build your monster.

Is the 3.6 not powerful enough? The X51 will be near impossible to find.

IMO why not add some upgrades like an exhaust system and a Numeric racing shifter and cables and enjoy...

Do a cross post in the canadian section...zookie, pongo and jumper have all done engine work to their c4s's ( upgrades and replacements). Some in the US and some in town. Not sure of anyone local that does that kind of work though.

OP: I would take my 3.8 FSI Stage 1 over an X51 any day.

I'm just sayin'

I would consider test driving a turbo and see how you like it. That’s immediate and quick, no wait time to go from 300HP to over 400HP, and the cost into that car will stay mostly in equity. The turbos probably won’t depreciate too much.

Otherwise FSI engine would be my first choice.

Last choice, an LS conversion.

I have to say go FSI. The Stage 1 Street Performer will get you a good bump in power, an optimized torque curve, and of course unbeatable reliability for the m96. If you are budgeting enough to go beyond stage 1, even better.

You can uninstall and reinstall your own engine if you want to go that route or just send them the car. You also benefit from their very comprehensive testing. The engine testing is what convinced me that FSI was the way to go since I was originally considering an LN rebuild. If you can be without your car for a while I would highly recommend.

Otherwise, I have heard excellent things about both Turn3 and Alpine Autowerks, though they are not in Ontario. 997S and 996TT also work and could potentially be less money net of selling yours, but I always find used cars to require maintenance to get them up to where you know your old car was. The best car is the one you know best.
