Default Battery Dead

My shade tree let the battery run down on my 1999 996. Cannot open doors due to battery dead and frunk latch inside car. Any ideas on how to unlock? Thanks. Really appreciate this site.

Have you tried opening the door with the key?

There's a manual cable you need to fish out.

Sounds like the door latch is disconnected (broken) inside. I think the only option is to fish out the frunk or engine lid cable.

Doors need power to work. Only half mechanical. Battery totally dead.

Behind the front passenger wheel liner there is a small cable, pull that and it will open the frunk (it can be very hard to find), before you pull the liner, pull the plug for the tow hook, some people (who know) relocate the cable there).

Additionally, there is a cable to get into the engine compartment. Use a hanger, and pull int under the drivers tail lite. you should be able to grab the cable. Pull it and it will release the engine compartment and you can jump the car from there.

I guess this answers whether or not the locking issues apply to 1999’s. I’ve seen many references that it did not.

The doors in my 2000 dont need any power for the key to unlock them. I didnt think a mk2 was any different???

As others have said fish out the cables and i would open up the door card to see if your key/lock mechanism is working properly. The plast clips break and many dont know because they always use the fob.

The mechanical door mechanism does not need power. The manual is rubbish in not explaining how to open it.
‘I drained my battery last week, here are the steps:
1. Pull out key from remote fob.
2. Lift up the door handle and turn anti-clockwise, fully clockwise and back to start position.
3. Pull handle and open the door.
4. Open frunk with door switch.
5. If the switch is dead you can power the lid opener through the passenger side compartment. Manual explains this well.
