Back in April/May I was shopping for a fun summer car as I had just gotten rid of my two 'spare' VW Golf TDIs and wanted something to enjoy during nice weather for about 5-6k.
I was shopping everything from C4 Corvettes, Boxsters, classic Toyota MR2s, Corollas, Coronas, Starions, Conquests. Basically anything sporty and somewhat interesting.
Over ten or so years I've had various interesting cars - Mazda 323 GTX, Isuzu Impulse RS, AE86 Corollas, FX16 GTS Corolla, Lexus SC400, BMW E30s, BMW E34, E38, E39, E24 M6, C4 Corvette, 5 Speed LR Discovery I, a Geo Storm I drove from CA to MA, and a bunch of VW TDIs (my current daily is a 2011 Golf TDI 2 door) and some more I am probably forgetting. I also have a collection of motorcycles which I used to fix and write about on a blog no one read, http://oneguytwowheels.blogspot.com/ an update is coming I swear.
A 996 had not even crossed my mind until I remembered seeing a YT video of how much a bargain they had become, for better or for worse. So I started searching ebay, autotrader, craigslist - the usual.
Found a 99 with 130k in Brooklyn of all places that checked the right boxes - C2, 6 speed and coupe. It was also the cheapest in the country! /Hoovie
I totally blew the budget on it but I Think it was money well spent.
Contacted the seller and got the story. He bought it from a friend who owned it for about 100k miles when he moved here from Germany as an Ex-Pat on a work assignment. He only had it a few months until a one owner low mileage Millennial Edition was traded into his local dealer so he bought that. One 911 is a bad enough car for Brooklyn street parking nevermind two.
It has TechArt front bumperettes, side skirts, Wing I and headlight covers. It also had a set of really 90s and beat to heck German 2 piece wheels, ATS I believe. Everyone had inches of curb rash. Being a city car, someone hit the front bumper while parked knocking off some clear coat and the deck lid needs to be repainted. But otherwise it's a solid body.
Seller and I struck a deal and I booked an AMTRAK out of South Station in Boston to Penn Station NYC. Hopped on the L over to Brooklyn and walked to his, very very tiny, apartment. Gave him a check and enjoyed the 4hr drive back.
When I got home I had a local Porsche shop look it over after I viewed the stack of service records. New clutch 30k ish miles ago, and plugs/coils, valve cover gaskets etc basically anything it needed, it got.
The shop told me it needs typical 100k mile items. Shift cables, various control arms and suspension bits and bobs and a trans mount
Shortly after I got rid of the terrible wheels in favor of some Turbo Twists. Then I removed the crappy aftermarket radio and put a nice CDR220 in it. Next up was a wash/wax/PDR and some tint.
I know everyone wants to see the options but frankly, this is a pretty bare bones 996 which I like. Less to go wrong.
Touring suspension
No LSD
Cassette player
Comfort seats
Carbon gear ****/parking brake handle
"Aluminum look finish" gauges (white)
Stainless door sills with logo
I'll probably update this as things come up and get fixed
Welcome, nice car. You should take off the light covers, embrace the eggs. I have a low option 99 vert, one of the few options it does have is an LSD which is nice.
