Default Oil consumption etc.

So, I have an '02 C2. Car has been great, had it a year now. I have been consuming quite a bit of oil over that year. In my opinion. My bro has owned both a C2 and Turbo, both 996's. We are both mechanically inclined or more. He thinks it might be a bit heavy but that oil consumption in these is quite normal. I also have a tad bit of smoke upon start up out of left pipe, cold start btw. Which makes me think it is AOS.

But, oil consumption over the last few months has been about 1 quart per month. I think this is overkill. My Volvo R would consume, but that was turbo related. Not the case here obviously. Car has a slight miss as well, though not always present. So, I am thinking plugs, coils, AOS and some new clutch fluid. If you could give me some thought on the consumption, that would help.

I have done some research, btw, but there are so many random post' out there.

Thanks in advance.

I would be more concerned about this!

How many miles do you drive in a month that require a quart may be a better way to determine if it is normal. Cold start smoke and slight miss, you may want to check out the borescoring video from Jake Raby too. Other than that I think your thought process is the logical place for checking.

AOS, check the pressure - should be easy to do and first to rule out.
Plugs and coil cost some money, I would do this and scope to check for scoring.
Oil change, drop the sump and scope the cylinder from the bottom to check for scoring.

Yes, I agree. How many miles for a drop of one quart? Cannot determine anything from 1 quart per month.

I agree with rogazilla above. How much oil used? How many miles during that period? What type of use? Oil type/weight? Any unusual noises...tapping...clicking? How much smoke at startup? Both side or just one side? Color/appearance(density) of smoke? Very easy to check AOS health with fairly inexpensive device and a modified oil fill cap. Any CEL codes? However, not sure I would go to scope if there is not other indicators.

Forgot that part entirely. Daily driven. I push about 500-800/month. Plenty of city, unfortunately but I do probably a 2-3 hour drive every other week. Pushing pretty hard. I drive the car, not pamper it. I use Mobil 1 0w-20 exclusively. I check beyond the electronic sys. for levels. IMS was done at 78k as was clutch. I have about 88k now.

No unusual sounds or noises or tapping of that sort. Some smoke, only noticeable by someone outside upon leaving location. Then it seems to disappear. Left side. Gray/whiter smoke. No CEL. No leaks. No drips. Good coolant both in level and color.

Sounds about the same rate my eats oil. My car is has 200k and i got it with little or no service records. I run 5w-40 motul. No noises or smoke from my engine. I just think the rings r a little loose. Mine is just city driving and im not easy on it. I would check the bores just as a preventitive measure and try some 5w-40 next time.

Keep an accurate record of how many miles and how many oz. of oil added. You need to establish a usage baseline to see how bad it is and to watch for any significant changes. Keep the oil level at or near center point of elect. gauge/dipstick. Don't keep at the full mark. Any record on when plugs and coils changed? Not sure I would just go in and throw plugs and coils at it unless something more pops up. One would think a significant enough of a miss would throw a code. Maybe I missed it but how many miles on the car?

Never mind I see the mileage above.

Get AOS tested. Mine let a little puff of (could hardly see it) smoke at first start up of the day, a few months later my AOS failed. New AOS and no more smoke at start up.

If you watch the F6I vids on bore scoring, I think in #4 Mr. Raby gives recommended method for accurately determining oil consumption. I recommend trying this method and see where you are. You will never really know if you keep "topping off". Good luck
