Default Oil usage

Everyone,

New job, so my daily driver 996 c2 has been tasked with driving 35 each way often in stop and go traffic. Prior, i took the ferry to work and drove about 2 miles each way.

I had oil changed in early may, started job end of may. Just had to go to local porsche dealer to buy a few quarts and get a top off because i was low (appreciate that dealers will do that for free). Dashboard graphic showed me low but no dummy light.

I'd say ive driven 2800 miles since oil change. Is this normal usage?

Car runs and drives great otherwise.

Any insights are appreciated

Normal.

You're finally cooking off some of the water in your oil, and bam, the level drops.

How much did they add? I hate to ask this question...what type and weight of oil? What did the dipstick show before adding oil? The electronic gauge is not all that reliable. Assume you checked oil cold after sitting over night on a flat surface.

Porsche dealership added oil. Want to say 5w30 (assume mobil 1). I went off dashboard which shows oil level on start. Ive been watching the levels drop over the last few months till it started flashing, which is when i decided to go in.

I should check the dipstick but with a new job and an 11 month old, just no time

😃 it takes about 30 seconds. First thing in am, pop the decklid, pull out stick and wipe off. Insert stick and pull out again. Observe level. Keep at midpoint of stick.

Variables contribute to oil consumption on these engines. Yours sounds fine. Develope a base line and monitor.

Yep on the: checking procedure, level, midpoint, variables, and base line and monitor.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but if you're having the dealer do stuff like routine oil top-offs, you are in for a very expensive ownership experience.

5w30? I thought Mobil 1 should be 0w40. I have switched to DT40 so don't remember.

Sure would have been nice to know how much they put in. Each mark on the elect gauge is only something like approx. 8oz. From full mark to low mark is only approx 1.6 qt according to the Bentley Book.

How can having the dealer top off oil for free be an expensive ownership experience? Ive a solid independent mechanic who does everything, the dealership just givese free top offs!

I guess I'm not reading your posts correctly.

The owners manual says that oil consumption is normal, but I've never lost a drop in ten years of ownership. I use 5w40 and change it every 2500-3000 miles.

The quarts are for future use on as needed basis so i can fill as necessary. Remember, my original post was asking about normal oil usage rate, not asking people to criticize my budget allocation....

There is no "normal oil usage"... Every car is different. This being said, less than 1/2-1 qt. per 1000 - 1500 mi. could be acceptable. Some engines use more than others - "normal" depends on the engine. You'll figure out what's normal for your engine over time. If it starts smoking or suddenly starts using more than it did before, you can consider that a "red flag"...
