Exactly how required? They're compulsory here in CA, and a lot of folks will tell you that they get dinged for not having them, but I do not run them on either the 996 or my Corvette and haven't since...2005?
LEOs could easily use that as a reason to pull me over but never have...and on the few occasions I have been pulled over, I have not been cited for a missing front plate.
You might want to ask around locally and find out how aggressively LEOs in your area enforce this before you take the screw gun to the bumper cover. (And if you're already in the know, I'm sorry for any presumptuousness implied by the suggestion).

I know that my experience is VERY different than a lot of folks - but you might want to ask around locally and find out how aggressively LEOs in your area enforce this before you take the screw gun to the bumper cover. Regardless, I won't be drilling holes in the bumper.

None of my cars have a front plate. I've only been pulled over once and just got a 'fix-it' ticket. All I had to do was put the front plate on, take the car to a CHP office for inspection and pay a $15.00 administrative fee. I took it back off when I got home. This was about ten years ago.
In the last year or so I started carrying a fake email with my registration and insurance in each car, showing the bracket is on order. I try to keep the fake emails current but with only mixed success.

No requirement for a front plate where I live. If I had to mount one, the "strong magnets inside the bumper" idea looks good.
Simpler would be a form-fitting plastic bracket attached to the bumper with 3M VHB double-sticky tape. This stuff is very strong, but can (with some trouble) be cleanly removed, leaving no trace.

In the NW,, the missing plate is usually a "bonus" ticket when you get tagged for something else,, and in my local area its a
big addon,, can be 400 bucks, Oregon no longer allows "fixit" tickets for the most part,, and the local cities add their own fun.
Washington has some twists as well.
Of course there is the "construction zone" double or nothing play as well.

Why not this?

Based on your headlight resto, it's a easy mod. Same laws here. I just pull it out of the frunk if asked. Why spoil the look?😎

Rennline ( a Rennlist sponsor IIRC) sells them. I got mine from a link on this forum but can't remember what brand. Yes it is off center and the plate is angled as well. But being cheap I would rather avoid a ticket. Front plates are required here a MO and my while got ticketed in her DD shortly after we moved here years ago.

I searched for a post on a BMW board that I'm on and my last ticket was actually closer to eleven years ago. According to my comments back then, I could have a gotten a 'fix-it' or an 'infraction'. The difference being a $10.00 fee versus a $168.00 fine. I can't say whether the laws are still the same but I'm going to go out on a limb and say if they are, the fee and fine amounts have gone up considerably.
The CHP officer that signed off my ticket said that if when pulled over, you're a jerk, you'll probably get the higher fine version.

Porsche has a bracket for US size plates: 996 701 107 00
There is the part the plate mounts to and some spacers to adjust for the curve of the bumper (996 701 107 00 / 986 701 801 00 / 986 701 802 00).
Here is one example on ebay:

cds is correct. The ordering reference gets you the two blocks and the plate holder, screws and plastic expander nuts. Plate holder and blocks screw into an expander nut that fits in the two square holes in the bumper. The US size plates screws to the plate holder. No need to drill bigger holes. One caution make sure the blocks are in the upright position(there is an arrow for up) and properly seated on the backside of the plate holder or the screws will be to short to properly expanded the plastic nuts that grip the bumper cover. I use this arrangement cause I really don't want to be pulled over for something like no front plates.
Thanks.
Edited to add - my searches for that part number return some very different products. Are you referring to something like this:

Totally your choice.
Update:
Pelican Parts: nope.
Ebay: yes. However, my kit came with the screws.
Funny thing is after I ordered, received and installed I found the same thing in the frunk!
My bad the mounting blocks have the expanding nuts moulded into the back of them. Been a long time since I messed with them!

No can do as it is in Georgia getting a HAMMER installed in the engine compartment! Sorry. The kit is what Porsche designed for a front plate mount for our cars. It looks good, utilizes the two square holes already in your front bumper cover and keeps the cops from giving you sideways glances or worse.
Totally your choice.
