Oil Change Questions/Exhaust Mods
Hey guys, I'm getting ready to purchase some supplies to change the oil in my '02 Carrera. This is my first time changing the oil on the car since purchase and I was wondering if you had to replace both the oil drain plug AND the washer or just the washer? There is a Mobil 1 Porsche oil change kit at ECS Tuning that I will link in here which only comes with the washer which is why I was wondering whether or not they both need replaced. While I have the car on a lift I am going to look into removing the mufflers and taking them in to get either a Gundo hack or a Fister hack. I know these are both quite popular and I have read through a few threads regarding both and it seems that the Fister type mod is the way to go. Which do you all prefer and how difficult is it to remove the mufflers once the back bumper has been removed? Thanks in advance, Josh.

Always and every time replace the washer. The OE drain plug is soft aluminum and has a tendency to strip out the socket drive when removing. Get a hardened drain plug from LN Engineering....and the spin on oil filter adapter. Sorry, don't know anything about muffler hacks. I have a Fabspeed exhaust system.

When you pull the drain plug, visually confirm that nobody has refitted it with an LN magnetic drain plug - the torque spec is roughly half for the magnetic plug vs. the factory plug.
There's no need to pull the bumper cover to drop the mufflers.
Fister may still do orders with core exchanges - i.e. they ship you a finished set, and you send your "core" mufflers once you finish the swap. You really do not want to be sitting around with a 911 you can't drive because it doesn't have mufflers...

Thank you for all of the responses, it's greatly appreciated. I am going to swing by Walmart in the morning to see if the have the 5 quart jugs of 0w-40 and just buy the rest of the parts separately, I think I should be able to save a few bucks and get the magnetic drain plug as well. As far as the exhaust goes, would removing the bumper cover make it easier enough to justify taking it off or is it not worth the time it takes to remove it? I have a reputable exhaust shop nearby where I work that I was going to inquire about taking the mufflers there and having them do what's basically a fister hack in house. The car is in the process of fixing some title issues so I have not been able to drive it for quite some time as it just sits on a lift at work looking pretty.

Removing the bumper and the heat shields make taking the mufflers off very straight forward. If recommend taking it off. It's only held on by 11 screws - some Philips heads some torx.

When you buy the M1 at Walmart just be sure and check the jug for the correct ratings
MANY of their products are specifically made for them to a set price point.
This is true for their batteries, tires, and a fair number of their other name brand products.
Not saying their oil is,, but I have checked other auto supplies there and they differ in subtle ways..
Tires with a major brand name,, with lower speed rating, lower ply ratings, Identical branded
batteries that weigh significantly less than the same brand from a mainline auto-parts store.
YMMV

When you pull the plug, THE OIL COMES OUT AT 100 PSI! You were warned!
My garage floor looked like the Exxon Valdez had run aground after my first experience.

Don't fill the oil to the top. Read post #5 in this thread.
