Metal particles on magnetic drain plug
Hi everyone,
I did my oil change today and found some metal particles on the drain plug.
Nothing in the filter, it was clean with no particles of any sort.
I had my IMS changed 3000kms ago.
Should I stop using the engine or this kind of particles and the amount seems normal.
Did about 3500kms on oil change.

Wild internet forum speculation will get you nowhere. You need to determine what you are going to do with your engine. First step is to get your oil sample analyzed to see what is going on. That will tell you a lot, and you can plan a course of action from there. Leaving it up to an internet forum to tell you whether you should run the engine or not is just not a good idea.

Thanks
Oil analysis will be sent on Monday.
I was defenately not expecting this....
Last time Ive seen a plug like thus was after a break-in.. I guess after 150000kms my engine is breaked-in except for the new IMS.
Analysis will tell me more I guess.
Thanks for your reply!

Those aren't shavings...
That used to be your camshaft lobes, your lifters, and your timing chains, and probably your piston rings, too..
A rare earth magnet this strong will collect everything in the engine, especially after just being fitted.. Just think, that plug kept all that stuff away from your oil pump... How? Because the oil filter is AFTER the oil pump, so this debris would have otherwise passed through the pump, on the way to the filter.

I must admit the magnetic drain plug was new and fitted at my last oil change, same time as the IMS retrofit ,new clutch and RMS seal.
So it defenately do the job.
I guess I should keep running the engine till my next oil change and compare the amount of metal particles I find.
Sorry for the wrong term used.. I described thoses as shavings but I guess shavings are bigger pieces?
So my first post is now corrected.
I will wait for the oil analysis and will have more infos from there.
I just wanted to make sure that this was "normal" or acceptable in term of wear as the plug has been fitted 3000kms ago.
Thanks
Hugo

Mine looked very similar after first oil change. Posted a pic of it in the "what did you do to your 996" thread. Wiped in on a paper towel just to show what it looked like. Pretty normal is my understanding.
This one is half wiped clean so people didn't mistake shiny for bad.

I don’t have any of the technical qualifications as some of those here, but I don’t see anything out of the normal in your pic.

Perfect!
Thanks everyone.
I will use theses pictures as a reference for future oil changes.
Really happy to see the magnetic plug is doing an awesome job.
I will also post the oil analysis here as soon as I receive the results
