Exhaust bolts broken

Exhaust bolts broken
I have removed my exhaust system since I have to replace the engine. When I removed the three horizontal bolts holding the exhaust muffler to the bracket attached to the engine, the horizontal bolts broke... Do anybody have experience around how to replace these bolts? I think the plate the bolts are welded to is stainless steel.

I drilled out the studs and used stainless nuts and bolts on mine. What year is your car as the brackets change from the early models to the later years so the brackets on the mufflers and the brackets on the motor have to match..I know this as I found out the hard way. And changing the brackets on the engine is a major pain in the A**.
I have a bracket 996.111.238.02 which is for the passenger side of an 02+ car if that will fit. The list price on these is $385.25 and Sonnen shows them at $279.30. $75 for you if this is the one you need. Or try eBay or one of the wreckers.

I have some for 99's left or right side. I'll take $75 each just like Dahrn55 if you want them and don't want to cut off the old broken studs.

My car is a mk2 from 2002. Ok, I think I am going to use stainless steel bolts like Doug above. Doug, where you able to hold the head of the bolts behind the muffler when you tightened them? I am thinking about welding them in place... Maybe that is unnecessary?

FWIW, I've found that https://www.design911.com has a lot of the brackets & clamps at a pretty good price. Does this set have the bolts you need? https://www.design911.com/Mounting-K...GT3/prod13006/ (never mind. On reading again, these aren't the bolts you're talking about).
EDIT: yeah, the shipping can be a bit much but sometimes it's still a good bit cheaper than buying local.

Yes you can get a wrench on to the bolts on the muffler side. Not as convenient as the studs but it can be done. Remember that if you weld the bolts you are welding them to aluminum I believe. You can find new brackets on eBay, DC Auto and other sources, they seem to mostly be about $75 used. So if the side I have (passenger) is not the one you need try those sources if you want to just get a new/used bracket.
