New Member - 2003 Targa
New member here. First time owning a Porsche. I've mostly been into the Datsun scene for a number of years. Currently have three 1967.5 Datsun Roadsters. One is a 67.5 2000. One currently operating, one a current project and one a donor. I did the frame off restoration of the current driver.
I picked up a 2003 Targa out of California a couple of weeks ago. Two owner car, 69,400 miles. Midnight Blue with a Dove Grey interior. I had SGS Independent Porsche in San Luis Obispo replace the IMS bearing, 997 rear main seal, clutch, coils and spark plugs. They had already done the water pump, alternator, serpentine belt and idler pulleys a couple of weeks prior to the sale for the prior owner. I drove it back to Salt Lake City, Utah to its new home. About 870 miles. Car ran awesome. I was able to pick this car up for about $20K. Put another $3,600 into it. As a newby, I'm going to have lots of questions. I've been pretty active on a Datsun forum so I know how to use the search feature before posting dumb questions like the IMS bearing that has been beat to death. Currently, other than a dash rattle/squeak I can't find, the only item that seems to be an issue is the driver window doesn't retract slightly when opening the door. It can create an issue closing sometimes. I can manually pull the window down and it goes back up automatically. It just doesn't retract upon opening.
I look forward to learning a lot, and hopefully contribute something. I'll try to post some pictures once we get some decent weather.

You win! Sounds like a very good start. I've always wanted a Fair Lady, no - not kidding. Had a 240SX for a few years, provided very good service. Post a few more and put your location in your signature block. Pretty soon we will demand pitchurs!

Welcome, sounds like a nice 996 example and you are treating it properly. Glad to hear and looking forward to the pictures. Sorry no idea on the door window issue.

Welcome.
Window not lowering when pulling the handle seems to come up fairly frequently - maybe search the forum for door handle microswitch.

And my Datsun friends said "Don't join a Porsche forum" They don't want to help anyone. I think I'm off to a pretty good start. Thanks again.
I didn't realize how big these were. Should I make smaller?

Thanks for the link. It has provided some good info. Attached is a pic of the Datsun. I'll get some photos of the Targa this weekend and post.

I did everything other than the machining, and paint. Complete frame off. About 60% NOS. Everything else was refurbished. Every nut and bolt. I did a lot to the motor. .20 over Aires pistons that were teflon coated on the sleeves, ceramic coated on the tops, B cam, dual Solex carbs, balanced and all oil passages polished. A lot of work to the head improving air flow. I drive the crap out of the car, and it has seen a number of track days.

I just bought an 02 targa!
so the 02 targa i got is grey on grey. I had about 60k on it. It seems like the last few owners didn’t really do much maintenance, the clutchs pretty worn out, the main seal is leaking, I don’t have a clue on the ims situation, most likely hasn’t been done, I’m getting leaks from the fron suspension not sure why or where, and the car had bigger wheels on it so the drive feels so sloppy, I did put c4s stock wheels, but I still don’t know if it’s the control arms or what needs to be changed. Does anyone know of a good Porsche indi shop in CA, I really need help putting this car together. To top things off the next day someone punched my windshield and now that needs to be replaced and i can’t even find one for less than 1200. Please if anyone can help on to where I can take it for the mechanical work, I’ll even buy all the parts myself I just want someone who knows what they are doing. I’ve seen a lot of DIY on YouTube for this stuff but I can’t even change my own oil yet, going to be my first time soon. Any help is really greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the club; that Datsun is really amazing, I have not seen one like that (even on JDM show) and in that mint condition, incredible. You have very high skills, that's great and as already mentioned above, please share any of your DIY's on your new 996 on this forum with pics. Also you will find a lot of info on your 996 on this forum, just do a search or ask... Some pics of your 996 will be great too, Cheers,
