Default 996.1 with replaced IMS - anyone ever had issues?

Hi All,

I am just wondering if anyone has had any issues with an engine after replacing the IMS/RMS? (considering cases where the new IMS was not running for 40-50k miles without a further change)

I got my car and have done quite a bit of enhancements on it, it is with 80k miles but never really relaxed with the concern something may happen, so jus wanted different views.

Currently drive a late 1999 996.1 manual.

My indy says that whilst I can replace the IMS there are so many other things that could go with bore scoring, etc that spending the money to replace the IMS on its own (with RMS) may be a waste of money

I welcome specialist views as I want to make sure I enjoy my car without a crazy bill at some point

I love the drive of it by the way - thanks

Just check for bore scoring before doing your IMS.

I would boroscope your cylinders top (through spark tubes) and bottom (through the sump plate). If you're worried about your IMS, I would do it when you change your clutch and also do RMS. Doing it when you do your clutch will save money on labor costs. Also, check your filter every oil change, pay attention to noises, white smoke on start up, check your sump plate, install low temp thermostat, etc.

Consider there are many things that can go wrong with replacing an IMS bearing. You have a 99 996 with the very robust dual row bearing. Very small percentage of 98/99 bearings fail, and mostly due to poor maintenance and long term storage. These cars want and love to be driven. Change engine oil on a frequent basis. Install an LN oil filter adapter for the spin on filter and get the magnetic drain plug. I have a 99 C2 manual manufactured 7/98. It currently has 143K + miles and I'm not touching the IMSB, or have any preemptive plans for replacement. I just did an oil/filter change yesterday. Nothing in the filter, nothing on the mag drain plug, not even the gray sludge, fingered the sump and found nothing. So I just went for drive and enjoyed the heck out of the car. To me, they just seem to run happy on fresh new oil. Do I know and understand the IMSB...yes. Do I worry about mine...no. BTW, it's my daily driver. Drive to West Palm Beach...okay. Drive a mile down the road to the store for butter...okay. Been so for years.

Agree with DBJoe....I have a 99 with 50K miles and a RMS leak that is small....but I'm not going to do anything about it until I have to go into the clutch. I sleep good at night. But I always have to get up and pee at least once a night! It sucks getting old.....
